3 Steps to Creating a Kick-Butt Talk That Wows Your Audience and Leaves Them Hungry for More
When it comes to crafting a brand new presentation, it can be challenging to know where to start.
No matter who you’re talking to, you want them to listen attentively, understand what you’re saying and remember the most important principles that you’re teaching.
Unfortunately, the ability to do this doesn’t come naturally to most people.
However, ANYONE can learn to give unforgettable, persuasive and inspiring presentations that leave an audience hungry for more.
The secret is in the preparation.
Here are three basic steps every presenter should follow to create a powerful presentation.
1. Know your Golden Thread
If you were to summarize your presentation in one sentence, what would it be?
This sentence is what I like to call your Golden Thread.
For example, let’s say I’m going to give a presentation on the topic of conflict or confrontation.
I decide that my Golden Thread will be: Love is bigger than any confrontation or conflict.
I call this a Golden Thread because it’s weaved throughout your entire presentation.
You’ll say it multiple times throughout your talk so that people will easily be able to latch onto this idea.
2. Know your audience
Think about what your audience thinks and knows about your topic.
- What are the audience’s fears about this topic?
- What are their goals?
- What are their false beliefs and their hidden objections to taking action to improve?
Make a list.
I’ll use my topic of conflict and confrontation as an example.
Maybe some of the audience members fear that if they bring up a topic that will most likely create conflict, they will be rejected, judged, shunned or disconnected from the people they love.
Perhaps they’re afraid that they might be demoted or risk missing out on a promotion. Or worse, be fired.
One of their goals might be to reestablish a good connection with another person in order to restore a feeling of peace within themselves. They may need to have a conversation with somebody because an agreement was broken or there was an expectation that wasn’t met.
Next, I’ll think about some of the false beliefs that my audience has about confrontation and conflict.
One false belief I can think of might be that the person believes that all conflict and confrontation is bad or destructive. Another false belief may be that relationships can’t heal from conflict.
And finally, what are some possible objections that they may have to taking action?
- One objection might be that they’re too scared.
- Another objection may be that they don’t have time.
- They may believe that taking action won’t work for them or that they’ve tried something before and it didn’t work.
It’s important to make sure that you understand your audience, so you can speak to as many fears, goals and objections as possible during your presentation.
3. Give 3 simple steps
The biggest mistake that beginner speakers, presenters and teachers make is to try to cram everything they know into one presentation.
But the truth is that giving too much can actually backfire. In most cases, it’s better to give your audience less.
You see, clarity comes from not being overwhelmed with too much information – and clarity is power.
You want to give your audience power, so simplify the topic of your presentation for them.
You can do this by teaching one, two or three easy-to-remember principles.
Here’s how: When you teach a principle, describe the principle and then tell a story. This can be a story from your life or a story from somebody else’s life.
As human beings, we relate to stories.
We can also remember stories. This is how we internalize the experience of a principle and understand it.
You might be asking,
“How do I know which three principles I should teach?”
Start by Googling your topic and ordering some books on Amazon. And always remember that you have an amazing intelligence system inside of you, as well as a lifetime’s worth of rich experiences.
So get the creative juices flowing and watch as powerful and effective ideas start to flow!
Now, let’s put it all together
When it comes to crafting a brand new presentation:
- Repeat your Golden Thread many times throughout.
- Speak to the fears, goals, false beliefs and hidden objections that your audience may have around this particular topic.
- Then teach them three important but simple principles.
If you follow these three basic steps, you’ll be well on your way to creating a kick-butt talk that will serve your audience and possibly change their lives forever.
And for some of you, a kick-butt presentation is an essential part of your new life coaching business…
