In the absence of a clearly-defined goal, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.
Robert Heinlein
Every year on the first of January, millions of us pause to take inventory of our lives.
We look back on the year that has passed and wonder, what would we need to do to make our lives better in the year ahead?
What would need to change and what do we want to create?
We may decide that in order to be happier in the year ahead, we’re going to eat healthier foods, lose weight, find a better job, save enough money to pay off debt, or buy our dream house.
Setting resolutions is a worthwhile and noble exercise that’s part of the ritual of the New Year.
It’s too bad that by February 1st, 99% of us utterly fail in achieving any kind of results toward our resolutions.
In fact, it’s likely that by March our resolutions will have been forgotten.
It’s not because we didn’t want to be healthier, wealthier or happier in the coming year.
For a moment we may indeed have felt inspired and motivated to live a life that’s greater and more fulfilling than the one we have now.
We may have even set the same exact goal for ourselves in previous years, only to resign ourselves to falling right back into our old habits, or “daily trivia” as mentioned in the above quote by Robert Heinlein.
Why do 99% of New Year’s resolutions fail?
What kills our dreams?
And what steps can we take today to ensure that we turn our resolutions into results in the New Year this time?
To answer that question, let’s first examine why we fail to achieve our resolutions in the first place.
The 3 main reasons that 99% of New Year’s resolutions fail are:
- A lack of a burning desire to change
- An insufficient understanding of the power of our beliefs, and
- A lack of support in helping us achieve results
Simply put, we don’t want what we want badly enough.
We don’t really believe we can do it given the circumstances we are facing, and we lack the appropriate encouragement and support from friends, family or colleagues.
It’s easy to lose interest in pursuing our dreams and goals, not because the goals weren’t worthwhile or attainable, but because we didn’t have the right mindset and support.
Have you ever started a diet, only to fall off the wagon the first time your friend invites you out to dinner?
Have you resolved to “get out more” and meet new people, only to get sidetracked because you had to work late too many nights a week?
Or how about that resolution to start that new business venture that stalls every time you begin to ponder how exactly you’re going to attract enough customers?
It doesn’t feel good to admit that you lacked the motivation or follow-through to do something positive and change the outcome of your life.
The allure of “daily trivia” is seductive, because the safety of the familiar is comforting, even when the familiar doesn’t make us happy.
Fortunately, there are proven steps you can take today in order to assure you’ll be closer to your dreams and goals a year from now.
I’ve taught these same steps to thousands of people and watched them achieve extraordinary results in their lives.
If you follow these steps correctly, you are virtually guaranteed to be much closer to your goals a year from now.
Here are the 3 steps you can take today to turn resolutions into results
1. Find and fuel your desire.
Before change is possible, you have to have a burning desire to change.
You have to know what you want and you have to really want it. It’s not enough to think of a goal and think,
“Oh, that would be nice to have, I guess.”
You must know that deep down in your heart, this life that you’re imagining is really the life you’re meant to live.
In order to find out what it is you truly want, you first need to tap into where you feel a sense of discontent about your life.
Do you dread Monday mornings?
Do you dread coming home to an empty house?
Do you wish you had more freedom, more time, more money to do the things that really interest and excite you?
If time, money, age or experience were not an issue, what would you really love to be and do?
Once you discover your desire, you’ll want to fuel that desire every day by tapping into the imagery of what your life would be like if you were to actually live your dream.
Fueling the desire is a powerful habit that can be easy to learn but immensely effective in helping you create your best life.
2. Increase your believing
Most people fail to get results from their resolutions not because they lack belief, but because they believe in the wrong things.
Most of us have been trained to believe in the power of conditions rather than the power of belief.
We believe that our success is dependent on the conditions we see around us.
We look at our bank account and think,
“I can’t afford to do that.”
We take inventory of our experience and believe,
“I don’t have the right skills and knowledge to make that happen.”
We look at the conditions of our life and believe that we can’t do it, so we never even try.
Those who experience massively different results from the common crowd will say that you don’t believe in the result after it happens, you first believe in the result, and watch it unfold.
There are specific ways to build your believing muscle to work in your favor.
You are exercising those belief muscles everyday anyway, why not exercise them to create a life you love living, rather than to believe your life can never change?
3. Surround yourself with support
Very few of us have the support structure around us that tells us,
“Yes, you can!”
When we tell our family and friends of our intention to make big changes in our lives, we may hear words of discouragement rather than encouragement.
“You sure you want to take that risk?”
They tell us that our life is perfectly fine as-is, and warn us about all the things that can go wrong if we’re not careful.
The reason that it’s so difficult to get the right kind of support is because most people have their own insecurities and fears about change, and they project those insecurities onto us.
That’s just human nature.
They don’t realize they are holding you back, but rather that they are protecting you.
In order to get results, however, it’s critical to have the right kind of support from others.
We want to surround ourselves with people who have already achieved what we want to do and with those who believe in results, not conditions.
There’s a proven statistic that your income is generally the average of your five closest friends.
It’s not because income is contagious, it’s because mindset is contagious, and mindset is the cornerstone of financial abundance.
If your friends and family tell you that it’s too hard, that they’ve tried it before and it didn’t work, that you’ll never get far in this economy… then buying into that mindset will absolutely keep you from success.
These three steps—desire, belief and support—are so critical to achieving any goal, that if you stumble on even one of these steps, it can mean the difference between success and failure.
These steps may not come easily or intuitively to most people.
