The First Step to Know Your Life Purpose and Live It Fully
Confident women know their life purpose and live it every day. Learn the first step you can take to live your own purpose-driven life (and love every moment!)
So many of us walk through life feeling a calling for something greater, a longing for a deeper connection to… something — but don’t know how to make it happen.
Maybe you feel lost or as if something is missing in your life? Or you want to make a bigger difference in the world, but you aren’t sure where to start?
More often than not, these types of feelings are symptoms of a deeper longing — a desire to know and live your unique life’s purpose.
When you connect to and endeavor to live your purpose, on a daily basis, you gain a deep sense of meaning and the profound fulfillment of using your gifts and talents for a greater good. You move through life intentionally, your path becomes clear. And it gets even better: you tap into your inner source of happiness and create and live and life you love!
Of course, to follow your purpose, you must first know what your purpose is…
But most of us go through life with no clue of what our inner calling could be — and when you don’t know what your purpose is, it can be hard to stay motivated and inspired.
You may feel that you don’t know why you are here. Or what you are “meant” to do.
That’s why so many people after first hearing about “purpose” try to find it — thinking their way through it, trying to figure it out, pondering what it could be, reflecting on it incessantly…
Or even falling prey to what I call “the purpose myth” — wanting to just wake up one day and suddenly KNOW what they’re meant to do or be in their life’s calling.
For most of the purpose-driven people I’ve spoken with, “finding their purpose” was anything but simple, clean and easy! There was no bolt of lightning. They didn’t hear a voice from above giving them a specific directive.
Life rarely works that way!
Instead, most people tell me they simply “fell” into their calling and purpose. They discovered it upon their journey of trying new things and saying YES to opportunities.
Oftentimes they tried what they “thought” they were supposed to do — and it turns out, they didn’t love at all — but that journey launched them onto a path where they found their true calling.
The unlikely way I found my purpose
Oftentimes, after we get into a vocation where we’re making money, there’s an inner nudge that we’re not making the difference that we know deep down we’re meant to make. And the longer we ignore that nudge, the louder it may get!
For several years, there was a part of me that knew deep inside that I wanted to help women claim their confidence, step into their power, and shine their light even brighter as they love and cherish their body temple.
Meanwhile, I was doing that work only on evenings and weekends, while by day I was living cut off from this deeper part of myself.
So much so, I wasn’t honoring my own body by drinking diet soda and eating unhealthy food as I worked in my sales job under fluorescent lights, and suffocating from the stale corporate air (figuratively and literally!)
Finally, there was a moment away from work on a transformational retreat, I was guided on meditations and deeper soul inquiries that helped me to connect with my inner wisdom and guidance.
And I heard from my still small voice!
I learned that we can’t think our way into our life’s passion and purpose — the answers live inside of us, and we can get there by getting out of our heads and connecting to our inner wisdom. And being asked a simple, but powerful question…
A 4-word question that helped me finally connect with knowing my deeper purpose after years of struggle.
Are you ready to learn the same question?
The First Step To Find Your Life Purpose
Again, your BEST tool to access your true purpose and passion is your inner guidance system.
Unfortunately, we have been trained to not listen to our inner wisdom — and make decisions by thinking, analyzing, or creating a list of “pros and cons” instead…
Which makes listening to your inner wisdom a little challenging for some people. But that doesn’t mean your purpose is out of reach for you!
Because there is a simple question that will make connecting to your higher power much easier — even if you have completely forgotten how to connect with your inner guidance.
The question is this:
“What would I love?”
What would you love to do in your life? To experience? To learn? Who would you love to be? Spend time with?
Another way to explore this is asking yourself “What could I do for hours on end and enjoy every moment of it?” Where in your life have you done something and just completely lost track of time?
Refrain from judging anything that comes up. Refrain from dismissing the answers you get with thoughts such as “no one could make a living with that”, “this is silly”, or even “that’s for other people, I’ll never be able to do that.”
Even if you find it odd, your inner wisdom will not lead you astray. Be open and curious about the direction your inner wisdom points you, and your own unique path will start to unfold!
Of course, you may still find it challenging to answer the question “What would I love?” — many people do!
After so many years living in a culture that trains us to ignore our inner guidance system, it might take some time to uncover what you would truly love. At first, it can be challenging to decipher or put into words what our higher power tells us — it’s okay, that can be solved with some practice and exploration!
So if you’re still without answers when faced with that question, there are some easy ways to find your path and discover what you would truly love:
Try New, Fun, Creative Activities
You can’t think your way into finding your life purpose; you “experience” your way into it. The more we follow our inner guidance system and take bold, courageous action, the more we get clear on what we love and what we don’t love.
So instead of overthinking it (Should I try that? What if I don’t like it? What if I don’t make money at it?) — just start trying new things that your inner wisdom is guiding you to explore! Anything that even a part of you thinks would be fun and interesting. Try it! This will help you get out of your own way. Clarity comes through the process of exploring. Action is where you’ll get results.
Step Into Your Childlike Joy
Sometimes, the key to finding our purpose as adults is hidden in our childhood. When we were kids, most of us expressed ourselves fully through play, and focused on what brings us joy. And following that clue can possibly lead you to your purpose!
Think about the type of play you most enjoyed as a child. Does similar play (or activities that mimic that sort of play) bring you a childlike joy?
You might discover that just as you enjoyed creating parties for your stuffed animals, you’d love to become an event planner… or that the reason why you liked playing doctor was because taking care of others is an innate part of your nature.
Recognize your strengths and talents
Some people mistakenly think that “purpose” has to be a grandiose mission or a big endeavour that they have to undertake. That may be the case, but it doesn’t always happen that way!
More often than not, our purpose is deeply woven into the very core of who we are. It’s usually tied to our innate gifts, the talents we bring into the world.
But at times, our talents come so naturally for us that we don’t even notice them! If you’re unsure what your strengths are, you can ask yourself: What am I particularly good at? What do other people ask for my help with? What do I find easy that others find difficult?
Discover what matters most to you
Another way to get clear on your true calling is to identify the things you care about. Think for a moment, and notice what makes your heart ache or break. What can you do with your gifts and talents to help others and make the world a better place? Ask your higher self for guidance.
Volunteering is a good option to explore the topics that matter to you and dedicate some of your time to help solve those issues in the world. Maybe you’ll feel called to help at an animal shelter, or at a local school… see how you feel when you’re making a difference in the causes you care about, and you’ll be closer to finding your purpose!
Whatever it is you find while exploring the things you love, trust your inner guidance. Take steps towards what you want, and remove those things in your life that don’t bring you joy along the way.
Doing what you love, even if it’s for an hour a week will work wonders in your life! When you are inspired and connected to your joy, inspiration floods your heart and soul. By doing what you love, you will be inspired and gain insights into what brings you the most joy, fulfillment and purpose.
That’s how I finally left my successful corporate job on a mission to find my happiness — and found it, by taking one step at a time and exploring many different ways of living my passion.
And you can use the same method to find your purpose!
But there is one last “myth” that prevents a lot of people from tapping into their inner calling…
The “One Purpose” Myth
Many of us struggle because we try to find that ONE thing we are meant to do; but trying to find only one thing is the reason why we feel like something is missing.
The notion that we have only one thing we are meant for can be limiting, because it prevents us from fulfilling our greatness. Let go of thinking there is only one purpose for you — embrace the idea that our purpose in life is to love life fully and pour ourselves into everything we do!
You may also have a different purpose for each role you play in life. I have a purpose as a mother, as a wife, as a daughter, as a friend, and as a business owner.
The way I express my gifts and talents in my career has shape shifted over the years. It continues to grow and expand as I grow and expand, and that’s ok.
This means I jump in and try new things; I stop resisting the unknown and I fully engage in what is happening here and now.
To lead a purposeful life, I follow my passions.
I encourage you to do the same, to get in touch with all the little things and activities that you are passionate about.
Oftentimes, as we evolve spiritually our purpose boils down to making a difference in the lives of others. So find passion-filled ways to live life, making a positive difference in the lives of others, and you will surely feel that you are living your purpose.
The MAIN thing to remember is it’s OK to reinvent yourself — not just once, but many times if needed.
What used to light you up for a decade might not light you up anymore. You might grow out of different stages of your life — then it’s time to reinvent yourself and find a new purpose…
And this is one of the wonderful things in life: growing and evolving into the most amazing version of yourself!
How to ensure you find your TRUE purpose
Finding your purpose is not something you discover overnight. So remember to be kind to yourself and enjoy every step of the way!
Above all, this is a sacred, personal journey — and sometimes it can be challenging to stay centered when you try to tune into your inner wisdom.
The thing is, when we take in external influences (or even listen to our inner critic), we may stop listening to our heart and start chasing dreams that are not truly meant for us…
(I should know! I used to think I was meant to be a doctor, until I tapped into my heart and made peace with the fact that I am a creative being)
