It’s it’s really, really thrilling to have you, John, All day long as I’ve been waiting to interview you, I’ve been jotting down ideas. I want to ask him this, so I want to ask him that. So here’s what I’m curious about. How did you really get your start in business? So I’m imagining you’re sort of a young guy trying to find his way in the world.

How did you actually start your business leadership career?

You know, I wish I could tell you that it was intentional. It was. It was I was in a really personal, dark place, honestly, in my life. I had been struggling with alcohol and and even some drugs. And I was in a position where I was I was newly sober trying to figure out how to turn my life around.

And a cousin of mine happened to be living in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and he said and and he had turned his life around. And so he graciously invited me to come and just hang out with him. And so I went to Cabo San Lucas, really just to sort of work my wounds and figure out what I was going to do next.

And he owned a sales and marketing company. He was selling condos, nightly rooms, golf lots, real estate and timeshare. And he said, Look, if you wanted to if you want to start figuring out what to do and you want a job, make a few bucks while you’re doing that, you can come work to my work for my company.

So after being there for a bit of time, I said yes, I would like to make some money. So my business career really started the day I said yes to him because I had no clue the kind of business owner and leader that he that he had created for himself. I knew the kind of personal transformation that he had created, and I wanted that.

And I didn’t know that he had taken the same ideas and concepts from his personal transformation and learned how to become a great business leader. And so day one, when I walked into that office, I began receiving business mentorship from him, and it changed my life.

Wow. So you didn’t wake up in one morning and go, I’m going to be a CEO someday. It was more of a progression.

No, but I can tell you that even from the time I was a little kid, I was the one that was gathering up all the neighbor kids and telling them that we were going to play a game and telling everyone what the rules were going to be and organizing energy. I from the time I was a little kid, I had a passion for organizing groups of people, mostly in those days in service of having fun.

And the irony is business really isn’t any different from a leadership perspective. It’s really about organizing energy with people in service of some kind of an outcome. And honestly, the most successful way to do it is to do it where you’re having fun. So yeah, it was it was a great match for me.

I really like that idea of organizing energy, organizing energy. You know, it’s interesting. A lot of times in the work that I do it brave Thinking Institute and with the abundant coach, people will say, you have you’re so good at breaking down information. And I credit that to I was a fourth grade teacher and I had to take a concept and I had to break it down and break it down and break it down to make the fourth graders understand it and be able to do it.

So I think it’s interesting, too, that you can there’s a through line for you that you can trace back to. I was organizing energy when I was a little kid.

You know what, Lauren? That’s I really appreciate that insight that you’ve had because I’ve mentioned to others, you’ve got to listen to Lauren. Lauren has a way of coalescing energy and story and message in a way that is so simple, yet so profound and highly powerful. Now you’re you’re just revealed something to me. I get it.

Well, you know what? We were this is I think this is great for coaches to think about. When I was in teaching credential school, one of the things that they told us is if you want a child to understand a concept, you have to teach it three different ways. And we do that at Great Thinking Institute. I think you do that in leadership all the time.

We may not put that name to it, but it’s ability to share the same thing a lot of different ways. So that takes me to John. You have codified really these hidden laws, you call them of leadership. And so speaking of organizing energy, did that just come from, okay, I’ve spent all these years leading organizations and I’m starting to see patterns like how were you able to codify these hidden laws?

Well, I was I was blessed with, as I said, some great mentorship early on. And because of my personal path of of trying to make sure I had personal transformation, freeing myself from the bonds of alcohol and substance abuse, finding a spiritual life and beginning to really study concepts that create transformation, I began to see correlations between personal transformation and business results.

And that led me and, you know, the company I worked for really, I was grateful for the fact that they would bring in annual trainers. They brought in Tony Robbins trainers. They we had Brian Tracy come down to do some training, Zig Ziglar, you know, some really OG man. You know, the first real landmark piece of work that I did because I was in sales.

Originally I was in sales was a book called The Greatest Salesman in the World. Yeah. And in that book, he has ten scrolls. There’s it’s it’s a story that takes place in biblical times. And he’s got these ten scrolls and you the way that the book is laid out is you’re literally supposed to read one of these scrolls three times a day for a month.

And so as I studied that book and put it into practice, and then I began to look around at people that I was working with, and I would say, Oh, I’m doing this book called The Greatest Salesman in the World. And they would say, Oh, I read that book. And I would say, Yeah, but did you do did you actually do what the book said?

And almost no one ever did what the actual book said. So that really started the journey for me in learning what the fundamental principles that really are underneath and the foundation for all of the concepts that people are more familiar with when they think of leadership. And so I began to really codify what are those fundamental leadership concepts that are unchangeable.

They’re principle based, they’re not the hot thing to do this year in business. But the thing that really is, is, as I said, principle based. And that was really the journey for me to to codify those seven concepts.

Now withstanding the test of time type things. So let me let me backtrack a little bit and ask you, as you were navigating alcohol and substance abuse, my perception of that would be that there are some that you would have had some feelings about yourself or some things to navigate in your own inner workings. So I’m I’m curious about, you know, a lot of a lot of coaches that I work with or people who listen to this podcast navigate something called imposter syndrome.

So here I am having this experience in life and I’m trying to get it together, and now I’m working in sales. How did you navigate the parts of you that were still down on yourself, or how did you navigate all of that?

Yeah, that’s a self worth. I love that you, that you went there, that you see that, that point. So, you know, I was blessed with working a very particular process, a transformational process called the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Now, I didn’t work them thinking that they would help with imposter syndrome. It wasn’t the reason that I did them.

But there are a number of processes in those 12 steps that are the antidote for imposter syndrome. No, Specifically where you make friends with all your character defects. No one’s perfect. We’ve all got areas in which we aren’t perfect. So in that particular process, you, you document and uncover the areas that you love to transform where you might not be perfect.

You you make friends with the idea they can be changed. They are changeable, they are trance, they can be transformed. And in that particular process, specifically by partnering with the power breathing you a higher power of some kind and being willing to turn them over and then going back and cleaning up what they call in that work. Any wreckage of your past resolving to the best of your ability, any loose energy, making amends.

I had done some things I wasn’t proud of and going back to people that I had hurt and say I did wrong, what I did was wrong and I’m sorry that it hurt you. And I want you to know I see that. I recognize that. And I’m doing my best today and doing my job every day. To become the best version of myself was a major step forward in eradicating an imposter syndrome.

And ironically, as a coach, the last step that really makes that transformation take place is being willing as an imperfect person to help someone else that would like to get better and to not help them get better because you’re espousing you’re perfect now. But to say I’m on the same journey.

And when you recognize you’re on a journey, you’re not perfect. And yet the principles and the concepts that you’ve learned are timeless. And you don’t you it isn’t about you being perfect that they’re looking for anyway. They’re looking for their own growth. And the fact that you’re not perfect actually is maybe even more inspiring.

So yeah, that’s I mean, that’s really it. So today I’m still not perfect. I still make mistakes. I still I’m just doing the best I can today. And hopefully I get a little better, a little better, a little better as I move forward.

That’s so powerful. John. There’s a through line to two things that you’ve shared already. So you read augmenting those greatest salesman in the world and you actually do what the book suggests that you do. You work your 12 step program and you actually do what it requires you to do. And I know that you have a nickname of being the action man.

And so this shows it’s like this application of it. It’s not enough to read it. It’s not enough to think about it. But your willingness to go, I’m actually going to do this thing is what created this giant transformation.

We both have a friend named Gina. Gina is from Houston, Texas. Gina Yes, coach. And I love the way Gina says that. Gina says in her in a Southern accent, she says, You just got to do the due. We’ve got to do the do. And that’s true. I mean, you so I thank you for for that. And and yes you the willingness to do the do is is critical.

So yeah one of the things we this is reminding me when you were talking about making friends willing to turn it over, making amends. It reminds me a little bit of in our institute we teach a program called the Dream Builder Program. As you know, all our coaches get trained and certified in it, and there’s a module where we talk about increasing our sense of deserving, which is really starting to transform this self image.

And one of the tools that we teach is becoming a person of increase, meaning that everywhere you go you bring an increase of energy. And when Mary Morrissey, our founder, teaches into that lesson, she says, being a person of increase, the number one person who sees it is you. Yes, you’re doing it to support and lift up others, but your own subconscious is seeing it.

So I’m imagining you, John, making these calls, making amends, giving it up to God. If you want to use that expression. And the person whose subconscious mind is most seeing and impressing with this is yours. And I could see how that could transform your life so quickly.

Yeah. When there’s when you have things that have occurred or a part of whatever you’ve got going on in your own life where you feel bothered by it, you know, our founder Raising Institute would say that that is an energy leap, right? And so really at the end of the day, when you begin to, you know, close those leaks up, you know, you do that through action, through right action.

All of a sudden there’s more available to move to the next level. And yes, the way that you feel about yourself as you’re just taking action. And by the way, not perfect. That’s the beautiful thing about it. We don’t have to be perfect, just the desire to get better. Just start by acknowledging, I would like to be better and then take a step.

And you just it’s amazing what can occur. What can occur as you do that.

So one of the things that I think is really important for new coaches or a coach who’s been in it for a while, but wanting to grow their business, wanting to become the abundant coach, so to speak, is mastering the art of self leadership, which I know that you’re an expert whom I had the privilege of going with you, John, to your hidden models of leadership retreat.

And it was funny when we got there, there are coaches and business owners feeling a little nervous, like they weren’t big enough in business to like, somehow deserve being at this retreat. It was interesting to look at the buzz of like, Do I know enough about leadership to be here? And I don’t know what it was or what you said, but you presence that the self leadership is so important.

Yeah there’s we’ll think yeah it is by far the most important form of leadership period. There is no leaving others any place that you don’t know how to go yourself. No, I mean that’s really the the other thing that’s important for leadership is learning how to be a good follower, learning how to follow direction. I honestly believe the number one, you know, you tie together the understanding of me actually working the augmenting process, the 12 steps and many other, you know, pieces of of spiritual content and or frameworks for transforming anything.

I have a personal trainer, and let me tell you, I follow what he tells me to do. I’m in the gym and there’s a whole part of me that doesn’t want to do it. And yet I tell myself, if I’m a good leader, I got to be a good follower. And one of the things as a coach that I love hearing is he said he says, Man, you’re my favorite client.

I go, Why? And he goes, Because you do what I tell you to do. So that really is the first form of of leadership. Mastery is looking at people that have the results you want and being willing to do what they do, being a good follower. And the minute you do that, you are mastering self leadership. That’s that’s really where it begins.

And and all the rest can be learned moment by moment. And, and, and at the end of the day, there are people that know about leadership that aren’t great self leaders, and there are people that are great self leaders. And every single one of us as coaches can strive to be the best version of our own self leader.

As solopreneur as you have the most important leadership job that you will ever have.

So true that being a solopreneur is like a real you know, when they say the struggle is real, like I don’t want to put out a paradigm, that it’s a struggle, but like it’s being a solopreneur. I remember I went from teaching fourth grade. I was the reading specialist for my school and all the fourth grade teachers in my district.

And I had this little reading room, which was literally a closet like there was no like it was they made a closet into a room so I could read it and it was a revolving door. People would be coming in all day long, kids would be coming in, principal would be coming in, teachers, parents. And then I became certified as a coach and I quit my job and I was living in my parents basement.

And I looked around and I’m like, I’m in a room by myself with my cats. Like, this is what entrepreneurship is like. It was such a shock to me at first, like, Oh, I’m on my own here.

In a garden. And it is it is one of the single most challenging ways to run a business and or professions that you could ever choose to be a solopreneur. You’re totally right. And there are some you know, when you say what what really what advice. So this you know, understanding what it means to be a self leader would be one.

And then the second one would be even though you’re a solopreneur, you what you did so well is you found community.

And you didn’t stay just in the garage with the cats. You found a way to connect with people that were walking a journey so that you could support each other. And that’s where a lot of solopreneur is fall short, is they don’t find their tribe and then connect enough on a regular basis because that’s key.

Yeah, I went out in the beginning of my coaching business. I went out and did a lot of networking and I wish I could say that I had like some great strategies around that. But really it was because I realized, Oh, there’s other business people that are meeting and I’m sitting here by myself in the basement. I just want to go be with people.

And so networking turned into a huge part of my revenue and my my journey. But really the the deep desire was just to be around other people who were doing a similar thing to turned out to be a great strategy but I didn’t like you said, plan for that. But it was great. Yeah.

Good move. I know on the day that we’re recording this, John, I heard that you had a very special personal moment today. You reached a personal goal in terms of your health. And I want to is a great example of self leadership. So I would love if you’d be willing to tell the audience about kind of the background and then setting this goal and then what happens?

Okay, you know, I’ll be willing to share this. I can show you a quick picture. I am so 2018 and of course, at the time of recording this, that’s six years ago this month, I had a life changing experience. In fact, my wife was when I got home today, she was in tears saying I didn’t know what that day really meant.

I was full of fear. But when I see what you’re doing today, it all makes sense. Many of you probably remember that Steve Jobs commencement speech that he gave at Stanford, where he said, you can’t connect the dots looking forward, but you can connect them looking back. So six years ago this month, I had a heart attack and I was in the hospital and they were prepping me for surgery and telling me it might not come out.

So what? You know, they were asking for my health care directive and did I have a will and all this kind of stuff. And it was super scary. Good news. Clearly, I got out and recovered and then I went to go see a cardiologist. And at that point they said, okay, your heart’s got damage. And we get to decide, you know, where we want to go from here.

Now, you know, one of the things I love about being a brave thinker is that unlike my doctor, the first doctor I saw who which was he was a common our what we call a common our thing or someone using common sense coming from the standard ideas. Well, let’s make the best out of this. You can’t do everything you used to do, but let’s see what you can do with sort of the energy.

And so, you know, we define that as as common our thinking, which means looking to circumstance, situation and condition for permission as to what we can do. Be your have. So I’m now someone who’s had a heart attack. I can’t do everything I can. No granite. You got to you’ve got to be smart and do things strategically. But brave thinking is is having the courage to think and live from a vision regardless of circumstance, situation or condition.

So I was really blessed by getting my hands on a different doctor who could help set for me a vision of vibrant health. And I went to work on improving my health. And I’ve made some pretty dramatic changes over the last six years and and annually I get the benefit of going and doing what’s called a Roberts stress test, a heart stress test.

They put you on a treadmill and they crank it up. And I like to jokingly say they crank it up to either your heart explodes or you go flying off the jet. And it’s not that far from what. So every year I do this, and the first year I was able to stay on that thing for 8 minutes and the doctor was happy with me and said, Next year maybe you can make it nine.

And that has progressed to the point where last year I did 15 minutes and he told me that that put me in the top 2% of everyone that he sees on an annual basis. And this year just stay the same. This last year, this was last year, a year ago this month. I love that annual mark. When we talk about self leadership, the idea that every year I have this moment where I’m looking at the result of what I’ve done, you probably I’m sure you love that Tony Robbins quote where he says, We get celebrated in public for what we’re willing to do in private.

Yes. And so every day I take a step toward making a statement about what kind of health I want to have. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen on CNN there’s a doctor named Sanjay Gupta. Yeah. And I like his energy. He I heard him one day say that every time you move your body, you’re sending a message to every cell in your body.

I’m thinking, what is the message? And he says, every time you move, you’re telling your body, I want to be here. Oh, And so I really began to move over those years. Last year, 50 times, he says, just do the same job. Just and I’m thinking, I’m not going to do the same. I mean, I’m either moving up or I’m moving down.

Right? No stagnation in the interim stagnation.

Man. So I set the goal this year at 16 minutes. He told me that if I could do 16 minutes, that that would put me ahead of 90% of the people in their twenties. And so I set that as my goal. And today, let me grab this quick photo here. I did 16 minutes and one second. And while I guess yeah, yeah.

So I feel good about that. Yeah. Little progress every little, you know course, you know, we we believe in mega dreams. Big dreams, little dreams. This is a little dream of running 16 minutes, but it’s something that feels good and helps me feel like I’m progressing in the right direction.

I don’t know, John. To me, that sounds like a major mega dream because I was just saying to one of my girlfriends, she said, I think I’m to start running again. I said, The only time you’ll see me running is if someone’s chasing me, call for help. So I think that sounds like a major mega dream to me.

That’s pretty awesome. So here’s my question. So we’ve seen again, this throughline of a willingness to get better, a willingness to work a system, because I’m guessing for this there was some decisions made about a systematic way in which you were going to, again, organizing energy, improve your health. What do you do to develop willingness? How does someone who actually doesn’t feel that willing?

That’s a really good question. That is a profound question. So and I told my wife, I’m going to answer the question, but in and in context to this moment today, when I’m not feeling willing, if for me personally, the feeling is overwhelm, the feeling is dark, the feeling is at times a hopelessness when I feel like I want to change, but I don’t really feel willing to know.

I’m looking at what is in the way it looks big. Oh, there’s a feeling, Yeah. And so there’s a moment today and so door on my wife’s door. When I got home, she was just so proud and had tears in her eyes. And she said, What you are doing with your health? I had no clue. You know, six years ago when you had that heart attack, the good that can come from it, I was just devastated.

I was like, why did my husband have a heart attack? And today I see the gift. And so our our ability to choose moment by moment how we’re going to respond is super powerful. It’s a super important lesson for me. I believe it’s foundational for great leadership. So I’m on the treadmill. It’s 14 and a half minutes and I’m beginning to think in that moment my heart is pounding my breath.

I’m out of pretty much getting close to the point where I feel like I’m out of breath and I’m wondering if I’m about to give up. I’m not even at what I did last year, and I’m worried because I want to go 60 Minutes. I certainly don’t want to do less than I did last year. And my wife said, What did you do in the moment?

And what I did in that moment is the key for developing willingness. And it was to quit thinking in that moment. About 16 minutes or you’re only at 14 and a half, you did better. And the comparison and all of the energy around that quiet, all of that and just get in the moment. So I just relaxed and took a step.

So I gave myself an out. Okay, you put your workout clothes on or you start to make a smoothie or whatever it is I’m choosing to do. Once I had my tennis shoes on and I’m outside, the likelihood is I’m not turning back because I just had a willingness to do whatever the first 5 minutes of that activity was.

Yeah, the I don’t know if you’ve there’s a great piece of work named. It’s called Atomic Habits by John. Yes. He talks about that same idea of of giving yourself a goal that is so small that you won’t let yourself off the hook and that even if you just accomplish that one little thing, that the main thing that you maintain is your momentum, that you and your story, in essence, you know, you know about streaks.

You know, so you maintain that energy that you did. The thing ironically, when I first started exercising, first off, I was £60 heavier than I am now. And my doctor told me, he said, Look, just do 7 minutes. I mean, it wasn’t like trick yourself. I mean, he said, if you do 7 minutes and he had a version of what’s called high intensity interval walking on a treadmill where I would and literally all I was doing was walking on a treadmill and it was 40 seconds slow and then 20 seconds as fast as I could go.

And your heart rate gets pumped up during that 20 seconds and then you do 40 seconds slower and you got your you know, I would be panting my heart, my heart rate would come down during that 40 seconds and then 20 seconds, and it was 20, 44, seven intervals, 7 minutes. And if I did that, well, I could claim that I had done my workout for the day.

And and that’s honest to God. All I did in the beginning was just that exercise. But what it did was it built momentum. And your point, I think, is brilliant, the idea of doing it, because you have something you’re doing it for makes all the difference in the world for most people.

So yeah, so I’m thinking about for coaches, I think a lot of times with newer coaches or even, you know, as we’re building our business, whatever it is, I think sometimes we make tasks bigger than they actually are. So it’s like, Oh, if I’m going to practice my this talk I’m giving or this workshop, or if I’m going to post on social media, it’s like we put all this thing around like I have to be sitting at my desk and it has to be perfect.

And you know, it’s like we make this task so big. Whereas really, I think if we just as coaches gave ourselves permission, like, what if I just sat down and did 5 minutes of practice and that was enough? Or what if I’m just cutting vegetables for dinner and I do 5 minutes, like instead of making it this big thing like, Oh, I have to if I’m going to work out, I have to wear my Lululemon and it has to be a whole hour or it doesn’t count.

And regarding momentum and of course the analogy I in my own journey today was calm down, take a step back, get your mind off the big thing and just do the little thing. And then I would say and done, and I would push my hand down on the desk and I’d say and done I did something and just give yourself that, that pat on the back that kudos. You did something. Yeah. There was a moment in time where my this this was a super powerful point for me as a coach that was tied to my health and well-being that my doctor said at one point as I was working on this and there was a phase, I was struggling. And there was a moment I was in struggle. And he said, Listen, John says, Remind yourself around what we say in medicine, which is see one, do one, teach one. And I’m like, What do you mean, see one do 20, 20 said, Well, in medicine, when you’re in medical school, if you’re going to as an example, one of the things you have to learn is how to stitch, you know, stitch a wound as an example.

So the first thing you do is you watch someone stitch and then you stitch and then you teach someone else how to stitch. And it’s not until you’ve done all three phases that your own learning is complete. What are the gifts? And coaching, of course, is the ability to teach others. And again, this idea that you can’t give them what you what you don’t have, what that means is if you haven’t been the person to practice for 5 minutes while you’re cutting vegetables, if you’re you haven’t been the person to not make it a big thing and take little steps, which is critically important for moving energy.

My favorite example is, you know, I was teaching school, so I was, you know, working 40 or 50 hours a week. And then I was living in my parents basement and I have no job to go to anymore. And it was like, what do you do with this all this time? So I put myself on a schedule. Now, one of my greatest burning desires was I had to wake up at five every morning to go to work because I had a long commute.

I’m hour commute and I was so sick of waking up at five. And so I when I quit my teaching job, I said, You just get to sleep in until your eyes open. And that was like just so luxurious to me. So I never usually slept past like eight or something like that. So I every, every Monday through Thursday in my calendar, 9 to 12 was work on my coaching business and sometimes, John, I didn’t even know what I was going to do.

Like, I didn’t know what to do. I had like two clients maybe, you know, just a day ahead of me and I would cause myself to go to mine. And so oftentimes I was obviously trained and certified at Brave Thinking Institute, and there’s this whole back end online training center where there’s videos and there’s things that you can watch about how to build your business. And I just cause myself to be at my desk from 9 to 12, like I was going to a job. And the momentum that that built was ideas would come and I get, you know, I’d get ideas and I’d start to put them in motion. But it was also super flexible to me. So it was just enough that I still felt this freedom, you know, like, Oh, it’s only 9 to 12, but just causing myself to sit there and do something, who knows what it was. It built momentum, it built ideas, things started to occur and then pretty soon it was like, you know, I’m working all the time and I’m pounding the pavement and I’m teaching workshops.

I’m I’ve got a friend of mine that I’ve become certified. I fly up to L.A., I get certified as a coach through Great Thinking Institute. I’m still full time being a sales marketing executive for this hotel company in Mexico at this point, I’ve I’m, you know, enjoying life in many ways.

And yet there’s this calling for more growth. I mean, I had a great job. I’m making a ton of money. I have everything that you on paper, my life wasn’t perfect yet. There was this. I no longer felt like I was growing. So I go up, I become certified as a coach, thinking I might that my favorite part of my job was helping other people overcome their own personal challenges and seeing them grow.

And that was the thing I love most. Anyway. So I come back and I hang my shingle. I’m going to be coaching in the evenings, and the wife of a friend of mine came and saw what I was doing and she said, I would love to do that. I said, You can you go get certified? I mean, they literally have all the modules to run this business. It’s awesome. So she went up, she became certified and she came back. And one of the first things is, you know, that you do you know, any any coach that’s an abundance coach has a workshop or a talk or something they’re doing to get the message out of what they do.

And of course, embracing the institute that comes in the form of a vision workshop. And course they give you the, you know, we provide the PowerPoints, the scripts, everything to do it. You just got to do what you said. The practice part. Yeah. So she’s back, she’s certified. And I asked her, When are you going to do your workshop?

And she’s like, Well, I got to practice it first. And this went on for a few months. And finally at one point I said, Listen, you can use my I had an office for my coaching and you can use my office and do your workshop. She said, okay, next month and next month came and she was in that stuck paradigm delay.

And one of the things that great leaders I learned this from my mentor and decision is so important as a leader. Just make a decision. I’m doing it on this date and you don’t wait to you feel ready to make the decision. One of the fundamental leadership principles is decide and you will be ready. What I what I what I’ve come to call the position I was in. I would say I described it as success without significance. I and I not completely you know, there were some good things that I did and I helped a lot of people in very positive ways with the job that I was doing. Yeah, you’ve heard that saying, you know, people think they live 80 years, but way more often people live one year, 80 times. And I had spent, you know, from the time I moved there and of course I was really at the bottom and I had some great explosive growth. I learned a lot. And pretty soon I find myself at sort of the top of the proverbial mountain. And this is the destination and my bank account is filling up and my kids are in private school and I’m able to play a lot of golf and life’s great. And that worked for a while. And there’s a moment in time where you realize life’s not done with you. There’s more calling you. We are we are inherently either growing or we’re going. That’s why I don’t want to just do the same on the treadmill this year than I did last year, you know? So I get to this point where things are really, really great.

And to be honest with you, I started I’m sure that there are going to be people viewing this that feel this way, that I actually started feeling a little guilty for thinking that there should be more than this. I mean, this is what everyone wants, right? The big you know, the six seven figure at time annual income, the the big house, 6500 square foot, all the toys, bells and whistles, everything that you can imagine.

And yet there’s a moment in time where I’m like, is this it?

And I realized I began to pay attention to what part of what I was doing brought me the most alive. And it was the moment where I would have a leader or an employee or someone that would come up to me and say, John, I have a problem, John. I have a challenge. The same way when I was 24 and I’m facing, you know, being at the very bottom, someone reached your hand out to me and said, I can help you.

And they taught me frameworks that could help me. It was one when I had a chance to be the person to reach the hand out with a process, a framework, a set of tools that I knew worked, and then to see them begin to work with those tools and see the lights go on in their eyes that worked, that work, you know, send them out to go do one thing, one step forward step, just move a little bit in this direction.

And they come back and they say it want what’s next, and then to give them the next thing and over time to see where their lives. That was the part that brought me to life. Principles are unchanging growth. It wasn’t based on what’s hot today and what business trend or people using these were. These were things that I knew would work. They would transform lives. But it felt like this much of my day compared to all the I mean, I won’t even say the word, but all the other stuff.

And you’re right the all the other things that it takes to all the aspects that it takes to run an abundant coaching business are all opportunities to create impact and growth. Mm. Well, I think I would absolutely go where I could find a room full of entrepreneurs and solve. I would find one where I could get in for 100 bucks and I would put my hundred bucks into getting to a networking opportunity where I could simply stick my hand out and ask people what they’re facing and how we how I might be able to help them solve their challenge, whatever it is, and just try to help people solve their challenge.

You you called in earlier being a person of increase, so find ways to add value. What’s the biggest and honestly ask them that question. What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing in your business right now? And just keep asking people that question until I can find someone that I’ve got an idea that can be helpful and potentially even help them with it directly.

And if I just keep doing that, the business will build itself. And that that really is the way that it’s built is to add value, simple and entrepreneur because the whatever group that you love to serve, serve that group, add value in that community.

Do you ever just look at what someone’s doing, whether it’s someone you’re coaching or someone that you’re the leader or one of your employees or whoever it is and just want to say, snap out of it, like just do the thing? And how do you navigate those moments as a leader or even as a coach when you’re looking at the client or the employee or whoever it is, sabotaging themselves or just being frustrating?

Out of it? Yeah. So one of the things that I’m blessed with, of course, with having had the experience that I started with, is that I know what it means. I know what it looks like to make a complete mess out of your life. And it’s all driven by the thinking, right? All of the thinking that I had.

And so I’m, I’m as much as, you know, in this day and age, I really do live a blessed life. I’ve never forgotten I came from. And there’s a sense of humility that comes with that. So I have a deep compassion and respect when people are stuck because I’ve been stuck. And so what I as much as I would love to say, snap out of it, I know that that generally doesn’t work a whole, whole lot.

Lead. Do you want more of this or would you love to see it change? And literally the snap out of it moment is them making a decision for something new and being willing to change. And you can have that. And you know, the snap out of it moment is if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to keep getting what you’re getting.

And when one of your leaders has a magic moment, they come up with a great idea or they’re celebrating a win.
