All right, well, welcome to the Abundant Coach. And oh my gosh, you are going to get so many gold nuggets out of this one. I already know because my next guests is the amazing and when. So and started as a professional dancer, then became an engineer and then became a coach. So we’re going to talk for sure about that journey is super fascinating.
00;00;51;16 – 00;01;15;21
Lauren Brollier Newton
She is actually the premier transformational coach in Norway. She got certified here at Brave Thinking Institute, took all of our coaching programs to Norway, translated things into Norwegian, and she has served thousands of people with her coaching work. This year alone, her business is has already done $1.2 million. She has a wealth of knowledge and I’m so grateful to have my friend here and on.
00;01;15;21 – 00;01;20;25
Lauren Brollier Newton
And thank you so much for being willing to be on the podcast.
00;01;20;27 – 00;01;26;06
Anne Oyen
Thank you, Laura, and it’s a pleasure to be here. Yeah. Thank you for. Yeah.
00;01;26;13 – 00;01;44;24
Lauren Brollier Newton
So I want to talk about so many things, in this time that I get to have with you. So I want to start by noticing how interesting your background is that you’re a professional dancer. Then you become an engineer. And to me, like, I don’t know if this is true, but but just to me, that sounds like the most opposite end of the spectrum.
00;01;44;24 – 00;02;04;26
Lauren Brollier Newton
You could get dancer to engineer. So like, I would just love to hear a little bit about that transition because my guess is that many of the coaches who listen to this podcast are supporting clients who are thinking about career changes. And, and I could imagine the number, the number of objections that your brain would have to go from dancer to engineer.
00;02;04;26 – 00;02;07;10
Lauren Brollier Newton
So tell us a little bit about that part of your life.
00;02;07;13 – 00;02;09;23
Anne Oyen
Well, absolutely. And I.
00;02;09;26 – 00;02;13;05
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I think that everyone I talked to, they they find it kind of.
00;02;13;05 – 00;02;17;10
Anne Oyen
Interesting that shift. And some people might go the other.
00;02;17;10 – 00;02;18;09
Anne Oyen
Way, you know, from the.
00;02;18;09 – 00;02;20;08
Anne Oyen
Really more.
00;02;20;10 – 00;02;28;13
Anne Oyen
Business and then to the more creative. But my dream, as a child was to become a professional dancer.
00;02;28;15 – 00;02;29;18
Anne Oyen
And,
00;02;29;20 – 00;02;37;04
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I, I really lived my dream, and, I felt so alive dancing. And I was.
00;02;37;04 – 00;02;38;27
Anne Oyen
Teaching ballet.
00;02;38;27 – 00;02;42;18
Anne Oyen
And different kinds of of dance from different schools.
00;02;42;20 – 00;02;44;06
Anne Oyen
And, it was just.
00;02;44;11 – 00;02;46;17
Anne Oyen
Kind of this thing, you know, it starts with a.
00;02;46;17 – 00;02;49;28
Anne Oyen
Small.
00;02;50;01 – 00;03;17;02
Anne Oyen
Feeling of that there’s something there’s something, that is not quite right. And then I have this kind of longing for something else. After a few years in dancing, I started having this longing for something else. And at this point in my life, I believe the longing was different things. One thing was more just more structure around my life because I was really not happy in my life at that time.
00;03;17;02 – 00;03;26;29
Anne Oyen
I was depressed. Most of the time. I was living like really unhealthy. I had terrible relationships. I had.
00;03;27;01 – 00;03;28;12
Anne Oyen
Always ran out.
00;03;28;12 – 00;03;32;18
Anne Oyen
Of money. I was that person who always borrowed money from family and friends.
00;03;32;20 – 00;03;34;11
Anne Oyen
So I would say.
00;03;34;11 – 00;03;57;03
Anne Oyen
Most of my life felt like a struggle. I was not happy in my life, so I think I had actually a longing for more structure in my life and that part. But also I could feel this longing to use my brain because I’ve always been really interested in math, mathematics, physics, these kind of subjects. And I had this longing to to explore this part of me.
00;03;57;06 – 00;04;00;15
Anne Oyen
So I remember going to like a career.
00;04;00;17 – 00;04;01;26
Anne Oyen
Person who helped me.
00;04;02;02 – 00;04;09;10
Anne Oyen
And I’ve had ideas about different career paths that I could take. And, you know, it’s interesting because I didn’t have any any.
00;04;09;10 – 00;04;11;02
Anne Oyen
Words for or.
00;04;11;02 – 00;04;33;19
Anne Oyen
Conception of the idea of intuition that I that you can actually know when something’s right for you. But I had I was like an unconscious competent because I could really feel when she came with some ideas that no, no, no. And then she said engineer because she looked at my from high school and she’s all the subjects that I had from mathematics and physics.
00;04;33;19 – 00;04;43;00
Anne Oyen
And she said, well, you can actually apply it to become an engineer or them take the engineering study. I could just feel like I don’t really know what an engineer.
00;04;43;00 – 00;04;45;20
Anne Oyen
Does, but this feels.
00;04;45;22 – 00;04;50;18
Anne Oyen
Like the right path for me. And then what came up the next moment?
00;04;50;18 – 00;04;51;28
Anne Oyen
You think.
00;04;52;00 – 00;04;56;23
Lauren Brollier Newton
Oh, like you’re never going to be able to do that and you’re a dancer and what do you know? And yeah.
00;04;56;25 – 00;05;02;22
Anne Oyen
I played for like 12 years since I did the high school. And, I’m too.
00;05;02;22 – 00;05;04;24
Anne Oyen
Old. I’m not.
00;05;04;26 – 00;05;06;09
Anne Oyen
Yeah, it’s not going to work.
00;05;06;09 – 00;05;11;00
Anne Oyen
And what about the money? How am I going to afford it? I probably have to move into this.
00;05;11;00 – 00;05;13;15
Anne Oyen
Small student place.
00;05;13;15 – 00;05;27;19
Anne Oyen
And it was just everything. Everything rolls up. And it was actually in a conversation with my father when when it changed. And I remember because we were sitting on this like a,
00;05;27;21 – 00;05;29;19
Anne Oyen
Terrace or a porch.
00;05;29;22 – 00;05;30;09
Anne Oyen
On a sunny.
00;05;30;09 – 00;05;31;09
Anne Oyen
Day.
00;05;31;11 – 00;05;38;28
Anne Oyen
Where he lived. And, I told him he was never a fan of the dancing path. He’s a.
00;05;39;02 – 00;05;41;16
Anne Oyen
He was a physicist, so he wanted.
00;05;41;18 – 00;05;54;08
Anne Oyen
You know, that kind of direction. And, I remember him asking me about what I wanted with my life, and I told him about my dream to become an engineer. But I can’t do it because blah, blah, blah.
00;05;54;09 – 00;05;56;11
Anne Oyen
I had all the excuses.
00;05;56;14 – 00;06;00;14
Anne Oyen
And I remember him looking into my eyes and he said, you know.
00;06;00;16 – 00;06;01;08
Anne Oyen
If you if.
00;06;01;08 – 00;06;14;01
Anne Oyen
You think it’s hard now to make that decision, what do you think it’s going to be like in three years from now? And that was like a moment for me when I realized this longing is not going to go away.
00;06;14;03 – 00;06;16;16
Anne Oyen
This dream is not going to go away.
00;06;16;18 – 00;06;25;20
Anne Oyen
And it’s not going to be easier for me if I wait. It’s just going to corner. I was like maybe 29 at this point.
00;06;25;22 – 00;06;27;06
Anne Oyen
So.
00;06;27;08 – 00;06;32;03
Anne Oyen
I made that decision. I’m I’m taking the step I can take.
00;06;32;03 – 00;06;33;04
Anne Oyen
Which was, you know.
00;06;33;04 – 00;06;44;19
Anne Oyen
Filling in the application and then taking one step at a time. And I remember starting this, this path, I’ve got so many great friends. And I just thought, well, then why.
00;06;44;19 – 00;06;47;10
Anne Oyen
Didn’t I do this before? This is so much fun.
00;06;47;12 – 00;06;56;14
Lauren Brollier Newton
Yes. Oh my gosh. You know, the part that I love about this? And, I mean, the whole thing is just like, oh my gosh, heart open to the sky. But I love the the.
00;06;56;14 – 00;06;57;26
Anne Oyen
Way that you.
00;06;57;29 – 00;07;17;26
Lauren Brollier Newton
Felt that intuition. You didn’t know it was intuition. But you’re hearing things and there’s a no and no and no. And then even though you don’t know everything about it or all that’s going to happen, you hear about an engineer and you feel a yes. And that’s I have chills. Like, that’s such a beautiful description of how our intuition works, because our intuition knows more than the conscious mind.
00;07;18;02 – 00;07;37;26
Lauren Brollier Newton
The logic knows it’s just so powerful. So going back to dancing, I’m going to skip around a little bit here because there’s just so many fun things we can talk about. Going back to dancing, I know that into your coaching practice and business. Now, you’ve actually integrated some dancing back into your life and back into your coaching business or into your coaching business.
00;07;37;26 – 00;07;45;00
Lauren Brollier Newton
I should say. So. Tell us about what that’s been like about bringing dance into the profession of coaching.
00;07;45;02 – 00;07;48;07
Anne Oyen
Yes. Thank you for asking about that, because that’s such.
00;07;48;07 – 00;07;50;02
Anne Oyen
00;07;50;04 – 00;07;52;12
Anne Oyen
Exciting.
00;07;52;14 – 00;07;53;13
Anne Oyen
Yeah.
00;07;53;16 – 00;08;23;03
Anne Oyen
Kind of new chapter in my business. Now, I did have when I started working, with my visions. So this was when I, when I, started doing the coach certification. Obviously, one of the things that I learned was how to create a vision for my life. So I started doing that. And one of the things I wrote in my vision was that I was dancing, and I was dance was a part of my business in some way, but I didn’t know how that was going to look like.
00;08;23;03 – 00;08;24;09
Anne Oyen
I knew there’s.
00;08;24;09 – 00;08;47;16
Anne Oyen
Some something there. And then I kind of forgot about it for a couple of years or didn’t forget, you know, but kind of suppressed it, I think, because I didn’t understand. And I had a lot of resistance because as a professional dancer, there are for me at least, there were things that didn’t really feel good the way I related to my body.
00;08;47;19 – 00;09;06;06
Anne Oyen
And, just, yeah, there was things that didn’t feel good and didn’t feel like self-care and self-love and, I didn’t want this way of of relating to my body. I didn’t want to have that in my life again. So I think I kind of suppressed that.
00;09;06;06 – 00;09;07;05
Anne Oyen
Whole part.
00;09;07;05 – 00;09;33;27
Anne Oyen
Of the vision I didn’t understand. And then, I came upon, well, this opportunity with, Jennifer Hernandez in the Brave Thinking Institute, she has, a certification within something called transcend Dance. And this is, conscious dance conscious. It’s not like a dance class where the teacher stands in front, and then you copy the teacher.
00;09;33;29 – 00;09;41;17
Anne Oyen
It’s a way of movement and dance from the soul. So it’s actually the soul dancing, and it’s a healing.
00;09;41;19 – 00;09;47;25
Anne Oyen
And a healing way of, Yeah, both healing old.
00;09;47;27 – 00;10;02;24
Anne Oyen
Things in the consciousness or in the body. So sometimes and it’s like, I sometimes feel like, when I integrate movement and body, I get like an extra.
00;10;02;27 – 00;10;06;03
Anne Oyen
Boost in reprograming old.
00;10;06;03 – 00;10;10;06
Anne Oyen
Patterns. It’s just not enough for me to just use the head. I need to.
00;10;10;08 – 00;10;10;17
Anne Oyen
To.
00;10;10;17 – 00;10;30;05
Anne Oyen
To have the body also. So, okay, so I, I hear about this opportunity with Jennifer and then it also takes a couple of years before I do something about that, because I think it’s my old idea of what is dance, what does it mean for me? And I didn’t really understand that there was just this moment of intuition.
00;10;30;05 – 00;10;41;04
Anne Oyen
Again. I was at, Bride Thinking Institute event I in the mountains. I went up to the mountains before the event started.
00;10;41;07 – 00;10;42;07
Anne Oyen
I was looking down.
00;10;42;07 – 00;10;44;26
Anne Oyen
At the hotel and I ask this question.
00;10;45;00 – 00;10;45;13
Anne Oyen
What.
00;10;45;13 – 00;11;04;29
Anne Oyen
Is it, you know, to the universe or the infinite? What is it that you want me to see while I’m here? Why am I here? What is it you want me to see? And in the instant when I asked that question, I. There was music coming on. I think there was like a party. Wedding party, maybe at the hotel.
00;11;05;02 – 00;11;09;21
Anne Oyen
And there was some music that I used to use as a, dance teacher.
00;11;09;24 – 00;11;10;14
Anne Oyen
And I started.
00;11;10;14 – 00;11;12;02
Anne Oyen
Just dancing.
00;11;12;05 – 00;11;16;08
Anne Oyen
Off in the mountains and also, well, while going.
00;11;16;08 – 00;11;35;03
Anne Oyen
Up there, I met Jennifer. So I met her. I go up, I ask this question, this music comes on, like, instantly when I ask the question. Then I just start dancing. And for me, I knew the answer to, okay, it’s time. It’s time to bring dance and movement into my business. I have no idea how, but I understand that I’m going to talk.
00;11;35;03 – 00;11;36;05
Anne Oyen
To Jennifer.
00;11;36;05 – 00;11;38;05
Anne Oyen
About this opportunity.
00;11;38;07 – 00;12;08;25
Lauren Brollier Newton
Oh my gosh, I have chills all over. Wowza. It’s like if if the universe slap you on one cheek, slap you on the other cheek, here’s the music, here’s Jennifer, here’s that’s so beautiful. And, you know, I think that the thing that is really important for people to hear about this story is that I think that sometimes when a coach gets to a certain level, so they’re like, oh, and when she’s made $1 million, she’s has all this success that they somehow think that self-limiting paradigms don’t come up for you anymore.
00;12;08;28 – 00;12;30;24
Lauren Brollier Newton
And and the truth is that I believe that as we get more advanced in personal development and in spiritual work, it’s not that the paradigms go away. I actually think they just get more subtle and more nuanced. So your paradigm wasn’t saying to yourself limiting paradigm the thoughts that hold you back. It wasn’t saying like, you suck, you can’t do anything like maybe it did in the old days.
00;12;30;26 – 00;12;53;02
Lauren Brollier Newton
It’s more like, I don’t think I want to explore that dance thing again, you know, or or completely unconscious. And so actually, for all of us, as we grow in spiritual development, as we grow in personal development, at the level that and playing at, she actually has to be in some ways more aware because her her paradigms are going to be a little sneakier than the beginners are going to be.
00;12;53;02 – 00;13;09;03
Lauren Brollier Newton
So it’s a great point that it’s like it was kind of an unconscious paradigm and, and that’s great, great way to listen. So how do you integrate it with your clients? So you get this, training, how have you integrated it with the clients that you serve and into your coaching practice?
00;13;09;05 – 00;13;12;04
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I’m still working on,
00;13;12;06 – 00;13;12;29
Anne Oyen
Mastering.
00;13;13;07 – 00;13;13;21
Anne Oyen
00;13;13;21 – 00;13;15;23
Anne Oyen
The way to do that, like. Like we all.
00;13;15;23 – 00;13;18;00
Anne Oyen
Do. Working on mastering. Yes.
00;13;18;07 – 00;13;34;25
Anne Oyen
Every day, everything that we do. So what I do today and and talk about paradigm is because as you say at this point, I have a, successful business coaching business. So it’s like, okay, now I’m stepping into something new here and I don’t really know what to do with it and how.
00;13;35;01 – 00;13;47;20
Anne Oyen
How are my clients going to respond? Maybe they think I’m really weird now what’s this? What is this new thing I started and but I love it. So what I’ve been doing.
00;13;47;20 – 00;14;15;22
Anne Oyen
Is I gave for my clients. I gave like a bonus transcendence virtual class every month and, yeah, I had so many great responses on that. And also I have a platinum program where we do retreats, so I’m implementing it also on my retreats. I’ve done it one time already, and I was wondering, because I put it strategically in the morning so that maybe somebody would want to opt out of it.
00;14;15;24 – 00;14;16;26
Anne Oyen
No. Nobody did.
00;14;17;01 – 00;14;18;28
Anne Oyen
Everybody was there.
00;14;19;00 – 00;14;27;20
Anne Oyen
Playing out, loving it. And I was like, wow, this was, more than I expected. Yeah.
00;14;27;23 – 00;14;51;28
Anne Oyen
So I’m going to do that. That’s what I’m doing now on my retreats. I’m implementing also the, the dance and movement transcendence and, yeah. And then I’m always looking for how can I implement it even more? Sometimes I do a little bit transcendence, and I do like a weekly, class for my, my clients live class.
00;14;52;00 – 00;14;55;06
Anne Oyen
So sometimes I put some transcendence in at the end, just.
00;14;55;06 – 00;14;57;11
Anne Oyen
Like, you know, three minutes.
00;14;57;13 – 00;14;58;13
Anne Oyen
Just to boost.
00;14;58;13 – 00;15;01;03
Anne Oyen
Their energy. We finally move on.
00;15;01;06 – 00;15;22;11
Lauren Brollier Newton
I love that is so powerful. And it’s interesting how, again, the paradigms will play with us and they’ll tell us all kinds of stories. Maybe some people won’t want to come to this and then knock it out of the park. Everybody shows up. Everybody’s like, fallout’s so great. So now let’s talk about let’s go back and talk about your move from Engineer to life coach.
00;15;22;11 – 00;15;34;13
Lauren Brollier Newton
And I’m curious about not only your move from engineer to life coach, but you’re living in Norway and you get your certification from an American company. So like, just tell me, how does that happen? Like, I want to hear that story.
00;15;34;15 – 00;15;41;17
Anne Oyen
Well, how did that happen? Wow. I can start with just going back to the conversation.
00;15;41;17 – 00;15;44;22
Anne Oyen
I had with my father, because I think.
00;15;44;28 – 00;15;45;25
Anne Oyen
That I.
00;15;45;27 – 00;15;49;14
Anne Oyen
Subconsciously made a decision that day.
00;15;49;17 – 00;15;50;12
Anne Oyen
That.
00;15;50;15 – 00;15;57;12
Anne Oyen
When something is calling for me in my life, I’m going to listen to that part of me.
00;15;57;15 – 00;15;58;03
Anne Oyen
Not going to be.
00;15;58;03 – 00;16;21;22
Anne Oyen
Easier to wait. It’s not going away. This is this is what I’m doing now. So after a few years as an engineer, I want to say I got my dream job. I was really grateful. It was an amazing job. And then after some years, I started feeling that full again. You know, something else? I didn’t feel happy doing it anymore.
00;16;21;22 – 00;16;36;21
Anne Oyen
It wasn’t my dream anymore. I felt like, you know, I left my soul at the door. And I had this feeling of, there’s something more in me, there’s something more. I don’t know what it is, but it needs to come out.
00;16;36;23 – 00;16;44;09
Anne Oyen
And, I remember a couple of kind of moments.
00;16;44;09 – 00;16;52;11
Anne Oyen
One was sitting in the, a conversation with my, my boss or my leader team telling me about all.
00;16;52;11 – 00;16;53;17
Anne Oyen
The wonderful.
00;16;53;17 – 00;17;13;26
Anne Oyen
Opportunity he was seeing for me with traveling and a lot of things. And I was just feeling like, I don’t want to do this, I don’t want to do this. And I had this other moment sitting at my kitchen table at home doing an exercise. I was doing like a, online coaching program with, another coach.
00;17;13;28 – 00;17;22;25
Anne Oyen
And, I just had this moment where I understood I’m, I’m supposed to do something else with my life now, and I have no idea what it is.
00;17;22;28 – 00;17;25;17
Lauren Brollier Newton
Were you scared that moment like, scary?
00;17;25;20 – 00;17;26;06
Anne Oyen
Yes.
00;17;26;06 – 00;17;27;14
Anne Oyen
Very scared.
00;17;27;16 – 00;17;28;10
Anne Oyen
Confused.
00;17;28;10 – 00;17;51;05
Anne Oyen
Ashamed. I thought there was something wrong with me. You know, I’m almost 40. I was like, yeah, it was almost 40 at this point. And I was thinking, what’s wrong with me? I’ve done dancing engineering. Why can’t I just be happy doing what I do? And, also at the same time, I wanted to meet the man of my life, you know, and and meet my husband.
00;17;51;07 – 00;17;52;29
Anne Oyen
And I’m thinking, who.
00;17;53;01 – 00;17;55;18
Anne Oyen
Would who would want to be with a woman.
00;17;55;18 – 00;17;57;22
Anne Oyen
Who is almost 40 years old and she doesn’t.
00;17;57;23 – 00;17;59;05
Anne Oyen
Know what she wants to do with.
00;17;59;05 – 00;18;16;01
Anne Oyen
Her life, but I could just feel there’s something here. So I started exploring things. I actually asked my my boss if I could could reduce my hours to have more time and energy to. I didn’t decide to explore.
00;18;16;01 – 00;18;18;21
Anne Oyen
Other things, but that was what I was doing. You know.
00;18;18;23 – 00;18;34;24
Anne Oyen
I was exploring what am I going to do? And then I was really open. So at some point I came across an interview. So there was this young Canadian guy interviewing Mary Morrissey.
00;18;34;26 – 00;18;36;00
Anne Oyen
And, she.
00;18;36;00 – 00;18;36;13
Anne Oyen
Told.
00;18;36;13 – 00;18;37;15
Anne Oyen
Her story.
00;18;37;18 – 00;18;39;29
Anne Oyen
About when she was had fatal.
00;18;40;03 – 00;18;41;23
Anne Oyen
Kidney.
00;18;41;25 – 00;18;50;00
Anne Oyen
Disease and didn’t, you know, the doctors gave her six months to live, and she had a baby and everything, and that and.
00;18;50;03 – 00;18;52;20
Anne Oyen
That whole story was like.
00;18;52;23 – 00;19;06;07
Anne Oyen
I thought, this woman has something for me for the 12 week Dream Builder program. And I signed up for the Dream Builder program, and I remember I felt like that was a big investment at that point.
00;19;06;07 – 00;19;06;28
Anne Oyen
Because it was.
00;19;06;28 – 00;19;11;29
Anne Oyen
Very kind of new to me to invest in my own self-development in that way.
00;19;12;02 – 00;19;12;22
Anne Oyen
Remember, while.
00;19;12;22 – 00;19;28;09
Anne Oyen
I was doing the program, I started thinking, this is what I want to do, this is what I want to do. I would love to teach these principles, and I had no idea that was an option. Even I didn’t know there was a coach certification.
00;19;28;12 – 00;19;30;02
Anne Oyen
I just yeah.
00;19;30;04 – 00;19;53;12
Anne Oyen
You know, this is what I want to do. I want to teach this. This is amazing. It just transformed so much in so little time. So, when this opportunity came, I. I went for that. But again, it wasn’t without the paradigms because my my fear or my paradigm was my limiting beliefs would say another education now.
00;19;53;12 – 00;19;57;15
Anne Oyen
Hello. What are you doing? How are you going to afford this?
00;19;57;18 – 00;20;03;08
Anne Oyen
And I had never in my conscious mind, ever thought that I would be a coach. So I thought.
00;20;03;10 – 00;20;04;00
Anne Oyen
You know.
00;20;04;03 – 00;20;10;07
Anne Oyen
You don’t know anything about this. You can never be a good coach. You can. You’re not a good.
00;20;10;07 – 00;20;10;20
Anne Oyen
00;20;10;20 – 00;20;31;10
Anne Oyen
Leader. You can never kind of run your own business. There was just so many limiting ideas about what I could do and not do. So I’m really grateful for the part of me that could just feel within all these paradigms. Could feel like, this is the way, follow me direction and you’ll be fine. So that’s what I did.
00;20;31;10 – 00;20;32;07
Anne Oyen
Yeah.
00;20;32;10 – 00;20;48;14
Lauren Brollier Newton
It’s so important for newer coaches and even maybe coaches who have been in it for a long time but are maybe aren’t feeling successful. To hear a successful coach like and say, here’s what I thought about myself. You’re not going to be a good coach. What are you doing? There’s something wrong with you. Nobody’s ever going to love you because you’re this.
00;20;48;16 – 00;21;10;08
Lauren Brollier Newton
It’s like paradigms are universal. All of us experience them and they’re not true. Because if the paradigm that Annee was hearing was true, she would never have served thousands of people. She would never have made millions of dollars. So it’s very important that we all know that when when you’re hearing that self-limiting belief, it feels real because it’s happening inside your body so you can feel it.
00;21;10;11 – 00;21;30;00
Lauren Brollier Newton
But that doesn’t mean it’s true. That doesn’t mean it’s truth. So this is so important. So now let me ask you about this. But you’re in Norway and and I’m pretty sure back in the days when you got certified, there was no virtual certification. You had to get yourself to Los Angeles, California. So did you have any paradigms around that?
00;21;30;02 – 00;21;43;04
Anne Oyen
First time I went to Los Angeles was actually not for the coach certification. It was for doing the LA Live in January on the same year. Was Dreamville alive in January? And then coach certification in March. So I knew I had to go twice,
00;21;43;06 – 00;21;50;10
Anne Oyen
To Los Angeles. First time I was really scared going all alone and.
00;21;50;12 – 00;22;08;22
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I felt kind of lost, actually. But then I had, it when it started, I had a wonderful time life changing. And then next time when I was going back to coach certification, it was easier because then I had done it already. And after doing it a couple of times, it was like, oh, this is my second home.
00;22;08;22 – 00;22;14;16
Anne Oyen
Now that yeah, I was really scared. And
00;22;14;19 – 00;22;24;09
Lauren Brollier Newton
So tell me, I want to hear about, like, your first couple of clients. What did you do to get your certification? What did you do to attract your first handful of clients?
00;22;24;12 – 00;22;37;10
Anne Oyen
Oh. Good question. So I, I did what I could with the material that I got from from Break Thinking Institute, and, I remember getting.
00;22;37;12 – 00;22;38;25
Anne Oyen
00;22;38;27 – 00;22;40;28
Anne Oyen
So the idea was to give.
00;22;40;28 – 00;22;41;27
Anne Oyen
A free.
00;22;41;27 – 00;22;56;01
Anne Oyen
Speech in some way or a workshop and then offer free, sessions, like a free consultation or session, and then offer, if it was a good fit and offer my, my program.
00;22;56;03 – 00;22;56;26
Anne Oyen
So I remember.
00;22;56;26 – 00;22;59;25
Anne Oyen
I, I actually I think I was so scared.
00;22;59;25 – 00;23;00;24
Anne Oyen
That the.
00;23;00;24 – 00;23;02;09
Anne Oyen
Paradigm of delay.
00;23;02;09 – 00;23;09;03
Anne Oyen
Would, would take me, come and take me. Yeah, we started before I got certified.
00;23;09;07 – 00;23;21;16
Anne Oyen
I held my first webinar, but I was thinking, I don’t need to sell anything. I can just start my do my first webinar, offer a session, and then I can do the sessions after I get certified.
00;23;21;18 – 00;23;22;23
Anne Oyen
So I had my first.
00;23;22;23 – 00;23;30;04
Anne Oyen
Webinar just before I went off to L.A to get certified, and I did. I didn’t know what I was doing, honestly.
00;23;30;06 – 00;23;32;26
Anne Oyen
I, I didn’t like.
00;23;32;26 – 00;23;46;07
Anne Oyen
I didn’t have, I didn’t know I had some scripts that I could use and I just kind of made up my own thing and I didn’t know anything about. I had some people who signed up, but I didn’t know anything about reminding them. So nobody.
00;23;46;07 – 00;23;47;08
Anne Oyen
Showed up.
00;23;47;11 – 00;23;49;29
Anne Oyen
And I sent a text to some friends saying.
00;23;50;02 – 00;23;59;28
Anne Oyen
Can you please show up to my webinar? I’m already due to go. I have prepared there’s nobody here. So I had like 3 or 4 friends who logged on, and I did my.
00;23;59;28 – 00;24;02;12
Anne Oyen
Webinar and I recorded it.
00;24;02;14 – 00;24;04;02
Anne Oyen
So and then.
00;24;04;04 – 00;24;12;11
Anne Oyen
I don’t remember exactly how, but a friend of a friend saw the recording and booked a session with me. So straight after.
00;24;12;11 – 00;24;15;12
Anne Oyen
The the certification.
00;24;15;14 – 00;24;19;03
Anne Oyen
I had a session with her and I just use the script.
00;24;19;06 – 00;24;20;22
Anne Oyen
Because, you know, this is completely.
00;24;20;22 – 00;24;24;22
Anne Oyen
New to me. So at the way home, at the airport, at the.
00;24;24;22 – 00;24;26;14
Anne Oyen
Airplane, I was just.
00;24;26;16 – 00;24;27;19
Anne Oyen
Translating the.
00;24;27;19 – 00;24;30;22
Anne Oyen
Script for the strategy session.
00;24;30;25 – 00;24;36;15
Anne Oyen
So when I came home, I was good to go. I had this film and I told her the Dream Builder program in.
00;24;36;15 – 00;24;37;07
Anne Oyen
Norwegian.
00;24;37;14 – 00;24;40;19
Anne Oyen
And I hadn’t even started translating it.
00;24;40;21 – 00;24;57;12
Anne Oyen
So that was the first like, kick in the, for let’s Get going. I had to, you know, she’s waiting for the next, module, so I just have to get this out. And it wasn’t perfect, but but I’m really.
00;24;57;12 – 00;25;20;22
Anne Oyen
Glad I did it that way, because otherwise, I’m sure I would never, you know, haven’t gotten it ready. The thing is that I did this twice. I did that, and then I did, free workshop in person. I called some some places and asked if if, they would like to have, a free workshop, 30 minute workshop with me and, so there was a place they said.
00;25;20;25 – 00;25;22;27
Anne Oyen
Yes, we could do that.
00;25;22;27 – 00;25;24;12
Anne Oyen
And so I went.
00;25;24;12 – 00;25;25;00
Anne Oyen
There.
00;25;25;00 – 00;25;32;04
Anne Oyen
30 minutes, offered strategy sessions, and I and I signed up three clients, from.
00;25;32;04 – 00;25;33;22
Anne Oyen
That at a very low.
00;25;33;22 – 00;25;35;11
Anne Oyen
Price because I was so.
00;25;35;11 – 00;25;42;06
Anne Oyen
Scared of money. So I was like, the pilot was not, you know, it was really, really low.
00;25;42;06 – 00;25;53;14
Anne Oyen
But I thought, okay, I just need to get going here. So I had three people. Two of them never showed up to class because again, I didn’t really know anything about how to maintain my clients.
00;25;53;16 – 00;25;58;29
Anne Oyen
And two of them, yeah, I think them one of them showed up for.
00;25;59;01 – 00;26;05;23
Anne Oyen
For all the calls. And then nothing happened for over six month.
00;26;05;25 – 00;26;08;26
Lauren Brollier Newton
Like you didn’t have workshops or you had them and nothing happened from.
00;26;08;26 – 00;26;09;08
Anne Oyen
Them to.
00;26;09;09 – 00;26;13;17
Anne Oyen
Anything. I didn’t do anything. The paradigms just.
00;26;13;20 – 00;26;14;14
Anne Oyen
You know, came.
00;26;14;15 – 00;26;17;24
Anne Oyen
And and grabbed me and I got busy with work.
00;26;17;28 – 00;26;23;14
Anne Oyen
I almost forgot that I have, you know, well, certified. So.
00;26;23;14 – 00;26;25;18
Anne Oyen
That was interesting. I got this,
00;26;25;20 – 00;26;27;05
Anne Oyen
A amnesia.
00;26;27;07 – 00;26;44;07
Anne Oyen
I just know and there’s, it’s so busy at work and everything and blah, blah, blah. And I remember a woman from Brave Thinking Institute calling me and one day asking me, how are you doing? Do you have any workshops in your calendar? Do you have any strategy sessions?
00;26;44;07 – 00;26;52;05
Anne Oyen
And I was like, oh, I’m so embarrassed. I think, I think and that was that was kind of the.
00;26;52;07 – 00;26;54;17
Anne Oyen
The reminder that I needed to.
00;26;54;19 – 00;26;55;12
Anne Oyen
To get.
00;26;55;12 – 00;26;57;05
Anne Oyen
Going again. And then I.
00;26;57;07 – 00;26;58;18
Anne Oyen
Yeah.
00;26;58;20 – 00;27;19;20
Lauren Brollier Newton
That’s so interesting. It’s funny because you had a lot of success up front. You know, you have this webinar, someone watches a recording, they become your client. And I really, actually like that. You charged a low amount in the beginning because what I believe is we’ve got to get ourselves going somehow. So if that’s the step that I can take, okay, I’m going to charge something super cheap, 400 bucks or, you know, whatever it’s going to be.
00;27;19;23 – 00;27;44;17
Lauren Brollier Newton
At least I’m getting going. And I’m really a believer in what Mary says about how baby steps will take you all the way up mount Everest if you just keep taking them. But it’s interesting how the that’s subtle delay paradigm that gave you like, almost like I like how you described it as an amnesia because it’s like, that’s why it’s so important for us to stay in circles of coaches and in the support, because otherwise we can just get so carried away.
00;27;44;17 – 00;28;08;28
Lauren Brollier Newton
I mean, and I am in Brave Thinking Institute. I mean, I’m the director of coach certification. I’m here every day. I hear the material. Every day I talk about it every day. I think about it every day. And sometimes, if I’m not really on top of my own practices, like working with my own vision, doing my morning practice, taking steps toward the dreams that I have, even though I’m sitting in the center of this work, I can get that sneaky pull away.
00;28;09;01 – 00;28;21;02
Lauren Brollier Newton
It’s just so important for us to be, you know, on top of these dreams that we have, because this is exactly what will happen. It’s just, ooh, that subtle pull you over here. There’s work to do over here.
00;28;21;04 – 00;28;24;11
Anne Oyen
Oh, yeah. The drift. The drift like Napoleon Hill.
00;28;24;13 – 00;28;28;12
Anne Oyen
Writes about, what’s the, what’s,
00;28;28;14 – 00;28;30;12
Anne Oyen
You know, the most,
00;28;30;15 – 00;28;34;18
Anne Oyen
Effective way that the paradigms pull people away from.
00;28;34;18 – 00;28;36;03
Anne Oyen
The room. You know.
00;28;36;03 – 00;28;40;28
Anne Oyen
You have the fear and the doubt, and then. But the most effective way is the drift.
00;28;40;28 – 00;28;41;19
Anne Oyen
Yes.
00;28;41;24 – 00;28;51;19
Anne Oyen
That’s subtle. You don’t even notice that you’re on the wrong track until you are out. So that’s why it’s so.
00;28;51;19 – 00;28;52;09
Anne Oyen
Important also.
00;28;52;10 – 00;29;13;11
Anne Oyen
For me to always have structures of support, have my own coach mentor structures to keep me on the path or I wouldn’t. You know, it’s like you say, you don’t. It just comes and it’s more smoothly. Like you said, the more you develop, the more sneak gets.
00;29;13;13 – 00;29;16;01
Anne Oyen
A yeah, you’re never you’re never.
00;29;16;01 – 00;29;16;28
Anne Oyen
Done I think.
00;29;16;29 – 00;29;42;00
Lauren Brollier Newton
Yeah, yeah for sure, for sure. So now you have a very, powerful zone of genius and you have a lot of live events. And I know meaning when I say live, I mean, like in person events. And my understanding is that, I mean, in a lot of places in the United States, that’s not common. Like, I remember the first time I had a workshop in Wyoming, people had never seen anything like a vision workshop before.
00;29;42;03 – 00;29;48;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
So, I mean, my understanding is that Norway, it’s also kind of not normal. So tell me about.
00;29;48;14 – 00;29;49;22
Anne Oyen
One.
00;29;49;25 – 00;29;58;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
Your live events now and then let’s go back and talk about how you got yourself to do your first, like, big ballroom event.
00;29;58;15 – 00;29;59;17
Anne Oyen
Today.
00;29;59;20 – 00;30;15;28
Anne Oyen
We’re doing and I’m saying we because I do have a team. It’s not just me or even though it’s mostly me on stage. And me as a, like a front figure, but it’s it’s a team that and I’m really, really grateful about that. And it it wasn’t like that.
00;30;15;28 – 00;30;20;21
Anne Oyen
Obviously from the beginning, but, we do three, three.
00;30;20;21 – 00;30;40;29
Anne Oyen
Day events. So, twice a year we do in-person three day events and, we’re doing one now in a, in January. And so far, it’s, 160 people about who signed up so far. And I think we’re going to fill the room.
00;30;40;29 – 00;30;43;14
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I feel the.
00;30;43;14 – 00;30;55;28
Anne Oyen
Room this time. As we’ve done also before, we had to kind of find a new venue last time because we grew out of the the last one and, yeah, it’s so much fun.
00;30;56;02 – 00;30;58;01
Anne Oyen
And,
00;30;58;03 – 00;31;18;23
Anne Oyen
And also just mastering mastering this, this, thing of, of really making it a transformational experience for everyone. We have people in the room who have been clients of mine for years, and then we have people in the room who have never been to anything like that. They don’t know who I am. They don’t.
00;31;18;23 – 00;31;19;20
Anne Oyen
Know, you know.
00;31;19;20 – 00;31;23;01
Anne Oyen
Anything. They’re just maybe a guest tagging along.
00;31;23;01 – 00;31;27;27
Anne Oyen
So someone and. Yeah, this space. So it’s it’s like a really the broad.
00;31;27;27 – 00;31;52;25
Anne Oyen
Spectrum of, different kinds of people. But I believe that we’re creating something that has value for, for everyone, no matter where they are in that, on their path. So that’s now and the first time, I would say the first time I can I can share first. The first time I did my own workshop that was like a, I think, three hour workshop.
00;31;52;28 – 00;31;54;02
Anne Oyen
And I had rented.
00;31;54;02 – 00;31;55;04
Anne Oyen
A room.
00;31;55;07 – 00;31;58;09
Anne Oyen
In Oslo. It’s like it’s something called the literature.
00;31;58;10 – 00;32;09;08
Anne Oyen
Literature. It’s it’s hard work in the English literature house. And you can rent like a room for, a workshop or, talk.
00;32;09;10 – 00;32;11;13
Anne Oyen
And it’s not very expensive.
00;32;11;15 – 00;32;14;20
Anne Oyen
And they have a huge list of people.
00;32;14;22 – 00;32;29;07
Anne Oyen
You know, so they send out newsletters to their lists. So I rented a room and, it was a free workshop, and I had, I think 21, 22, 20 something people show up to this free.
00;32;29;07 – 00;32;30;13
Anne Oyen
Workshop.
00;32;30;15 – 00;32;45;06
Anne Oyen
Because there’s a lot of people following the newsletter and looking for, you know, free events that they can join them. And I remember just standing outside of that room doing my first workshop, and I couldn’t feel my legs.
00;32;45;08 – 00;32;49;13
Anne Oyen
And my head was about to explode. And it was so.
00;32;49;13 – 00;33;00;28
Anne Oyen
Interesting because it’s not like my first time talking in front of people, presenting something, even standing on the stage dancing. But this was something new. I think it was just.
00;33;01;00 – 00;33;01;27
Anne Oyen
Really, really.
00;33;01;27 – 00;33;05;04
Anne Oyen
Felt really personal, deeply personal to me.
00;33;05;07 – 00;33;06;19
Anne Oyen
And also.
00;33;06;22 – 00;33;14;28
Anne Oyen
Though it was something completely new that I hadn’t done before and, I was I cAnneot remember being this nervous.
00;33;14;28 – 00;33;23;06
Anne Oyen
Ever before or after a while. And it was me. And it was,
00;33;23;09 – 00;33;39;07
Anne Oyen
I think I rented a guy helping me a bit with the tech things, and then it was just me doing everything, and that’s also the first time I did, like a full day event, which was the first at the beginning of what I’m doing today, three days. I started doing one day. That was the first.
00;33;39;10 – 00;33;39;29
Anne Oyen
You know.
00;33;40;01 – 00;33;44;18
Anne Oyen
Thing that I did, and that was also just me and the tech guy and.
00;33;44;21 – 00;33;46;11
Anne Oyen
You know, doing everything.
00;33;46;11 – 00;33;52;00
Anne Oyen
I think it was 18 people that day in the room and yeah.
00;33;52;02 – 00;33;55;22
Anne Oyen
I, I had fun and fun.
00;33;55;25 – 00;34;07;28
Lauren Brollier Newton
If you can’t feel my legs to actually get yourself to go on stage or you know, so to speak, what did you do in that moment to get yourself there?
00;34;08;00 – 00;34;21;13
Anne Oyen
Yeah. What did I do? I’m not really sure. There was people waiting for me, so I don’t think I. I felt like I had a choice. Always have a choice. You always have a choice. But I don’t think I considered the choice.
00;34;21;13 – 00;34;22;23
Anne Oyen
Of not.
00;34;22;23 – 00;34;25;01
Anne Oyen
Delivering what I had promised.
00;34;25;01 – 00;34;25;16
Lauren Brollier Newton
Right.
00;34;25;18 – 00;34;27;14
Anne Oyen
00;34;27;17 – 00;34;30;24
Anne Oyen
So I think I just,
00;34;30;26 – 00;34;34;28
Anne Oyen
I don’t know, I just did it with there and and did.
00;34;35;03 – 00;34;55;12
Anne Oyen
And also I had, I had, translated. So I had a script, like a vision workshop script, which was a script from the Brave Thinking Institute to how you can deliver a, a three hour workshop like that. So I had translated it and printed it out, and I had it in paper, you know.
00;34;55;15 – 00;34;59;11
Anne Oyen
And just I read it good. So.
00;34;59;11 – 00;35;06;00
Anne Oyen
That was, I thought, I just need to get going with what I can. So I think also that was something I was nervous about because I was like.
00;35;06;08 – 00;35;08;16
Anne Oyen
I’m a grown woman.
00;35;08;19 – 00;35;12;10
Anne Oyen
Professional engineer. And here I’m standing doing something completely.
00;35;12;10 – 00;35;19;06
Anne Oyen
New, reading my notes and feeling like a child. Almost welcome for the first time.
00;35;19;09 – 00;35;31;25
Anne Oyen
And, but, people signed up for a call with me. I had many sessions, and, I didn’t. I don’t think I sold anything, any programs from that day, but that’s okay. That’s okay.
00;35;31;26 – 00;35;33;00
Anne Oyen
Because it got me.
00;35;33;00 – 00;35;39;10
Anne Oyen
Going and, started to kind of, sharpen my, my tool.
00;35;39;12 – 00;35;44;22
Lauren Brollier Newton
I think this is so important because I believe if you’re going to be an entrepreneur.
00;35;44;25 – 00;35;45;14
Anne Oyen
That you.
00;35;45;15 – 00;36;07;24
Lauren Brollier Newton
CAnneot take one event or one call or one anything and make it mean anything. So you said I had a, you know, I read the thing, I had some calls. I might not have enrolled anybody. Many coaches will quit right there. They’ll say, well, I did it and it didn’t do anything. And that is I, I truly believe that success means just don’t quit.
00;36;07;26 – 00;36;23;26
Lauren Brollier Newton
If you just don’t quit, you will figure it out. You will discover. And every coach goes through this same process that and is talking about. And the powerful thing that I’m hearing about your mindset and is I’m just getting going, I’m just going to do the next thing. I’m just going to take the step I can take. I’m just going to serve who I can serve.
00;36;23;28 – 00;36;40;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
And it took you all the way to millions of dollars in coaching revenue. Yeah, that’s so powerful. So for the for the people who don’t understand, why would a coach want to have workshops. Can you describe like why that is a great business model.
00;36;40;15 – 00;36;44;05
Anne Oyen
Absolutely. I think for.
00;36;44;08 – 00;36;45;10
Anne Oyen
If I’m going to sign.
00;36;45;10 – 00;36;46;08
Anne Oyen
Off.
00;36;46;11 – 00;36;46;21
Anne Oyen
With a.
00;36;46;21 – 00;36;47;10
Anne Oyen
Coach.
00;36;47;18 – 00;36;50;14
Anne Oyen
And invest my money and my.
00;36;50;14 – 00;36;54;08
Anne Oyen
Time and energy.
00;36;54;11 – 00;37;15;22
Anne Oyen
I need to feel that I trust that person. I trust that person to to know something and, and be able to help me in some way. So there’s a level of trust there. And I feel that I like the person. We have some similar values.
00;37;15;25 – 00;37;17;24
Anne Oyen
And yeah, that.
00;37;17;24 – 00;37;28;22
Anne Oyen
There’s some I feel a connection with them. So it’s, there’s no like trust. I know them, I like them, I trust them, and I think that is so much easier to build with someone when.
00;37;28;22 – 00;37;30;02
Anne Oyen
You do.
00;37;30;05 – 00;37;31;08
Anne Oyen
A presentation.
00;37;31;08 – 00;37;35;00
Anne Oyen
Or a workshop, I agree. Yeah. You you.
00;37;35;00 – 00;37;38;16
Anne Oyen
Can.
00;37;38;18 – 00;37;40;19
Anne Oyen
Show who you are.
00;37;40;21 – 00;38;02;10
Anne Oyen
And, for me, I use a lot of personal stories. It’s not because it’s supposed to be all about me. But I know that through my personal stories, which is also been a growth for me to be able to share really personal stories. But I know that it helps people connect with something in themselves.
00;38;02;12 – 00;38;04;17
Anne Oyen
Their own problems.
00;38;04;17 – 00;38;06;03
Anne Oyen
Or limiting thoughts.
00;38;06;03 – 00;38;07;00
Anne Oyen
Or.
00;38;07;02 – 00;38;23;06
Anne Oyen
Whatever’s going on with them that, you know, there’s a connection there. So I can share that and I can share some concepts so help them understand something about the, the level of, what’s the word level of competence?
00;38;23;09 – 00;38;23;19
Anne Oyen
Yeah.
00;38;23;25 – 00;38;28;24
Anne Oyen
That I, you know, that I can help them. I think it’s just something about getting up on the.
00;38;28;24 – 00;38;31;17
Anne Oyen
Stage and.
00;38;31;20 – 00;38;33;19
Anne Oyen
Present something needing the.
00;38;33;19 – 00;38;34;06
Anne Oyen
Room.
00;38;34;13 – 00;38;37;12
Anne Oyen
Show that you can lead the room and and people.
00;38;37;12 – 00;38;39;03
Anne Oyen
Will will feel.
00;38;39;08 – 00;38;41;09
Anne Oyen
More that they can trust you.
00;38;41;11 – 00;38;43;18
Anne Oyen
To, you know, they put.
00;38;43;23 – 00;38;56;29
Anne Oyen
Their almost their, their dreams in your hands. It’s like a, vulnerable thing to do, to invest in a coach. So I think it’s really important to show first you are willing to take the step. First, you are willing to be.
00;38;56;29 – 00;38;59;06
Anne Oyen
Uncomfortable and be vulnerable.
00;38;59;06 – 00;39;05;13
Anne Oyen
And, and, take the first step. And if I’m not willing to do that, why should they?
00;39;05;15 – 00;39;06;15
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I love that.
00;39;06;15 – 00;39;25;03
Lauren Brollier Newton
And I think that’s the perfect, perfect description of why, speaking and leading workshops is so important. It’s building. What I’m hearing you say is it’s building connection with the audience. It’s helping them to feel like they can trust you. It’s building competence because they’re watching you and they’re going, oh, she knows what she’s talking about to some extent.
00;39;25;06 – 00;39;49;24
Lauren Brollier Newton
Right? So like, I want the beginning coach to know like and talking about just reading the document for her first thing, it’s like that’s still demonstrating competence. I’ve written this up. I’m sharing it with you. I’m putting myself out there like it’s really powerful. So. And, tell us how so someone comes to like, so nowadays somebody comes to your three day workshop while they’re at your workshop, they enroll in one of your coaching programs, I’m guessing.
00;39;49;27 – 00;39;55;06
Lauren Brollier Newton
And then do you deliver your coaching in person, or does that take place in a virtual setting?
00;39;55;08 – 00;39;56;15
Anne Oyen
Yes. In a virtual.
00;39;56;15 – 00;39;57;18
Anne Oyen
Setting? Yes.
00;39;57;20 – 00;39;58;23
Anne Oyen
Absolutely.
00;39;58;23 – 00;40;01;09
Anne Oyen
Otherwise, I could only work with people.
00;40;01;12 – 00;40;04;07
Anne Oyen
In my area, which would be very limiting and.
00;40;04;09 – 00;40;07;24
Anne Oyen
Take much more time for them. And for me, of course.
00;40;07;24 – 00;40;08;26
Anne Oyen
But for them.
00;40;08;26 – 00;40;25;19
Anne Oyen
Especially, I have to travel and and instead of just, you can be wherever you are and and doesn’t. You know, I have some client sitting in Greece, and different places and different countries. So yeah, I, I love being able to work like that.
00;40;25;19 – 00;40;26;19
Anne Oyen
00;40;26;22 – 00;40;35;11
Anne Oyen
We do some for, for some of our clients, like platinum level clients, we do some retreats. So then we get together.
00;40;35;11 – 00;40;37;19
Anne Oyen
At, luxurious.
00;40;37;19 – 00;40;44;01
Anne Oyen
Venue several days together. So that’s the, you know, we do meet in person like that, but.
00;40;44;03 – 00;40;45;29
Anne Oyen
The kind of more regular.
00;40;45;29 – 00;40;47;16
Anne Oyen
Coaching that’s.
00;40;47;18 – 00;40;48;16
Anne Oyen
Virtually.
00;40;48;19 – 00;41;11;18
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I think that’s I think I think actually it’s an interesting question because I think it’s kind of, an idea or an old paradigm that you have to meet in person and like a therapy session and sit in front of each other because so many people ask me, I have my office here, and people ask me, well, you know, about me taking clients here.
00;41;11;18 – 00;41;13;22
Anne Oyen
And I say, no, I don’t have my clients here.
00;41;13;22 – 00;41;20;11
Anne Oyen
You know, we talk on here more. Oh, and it’s like, okay, is that what you know?
00;41;20;14 – 00;41;40;02
Lauren Brollier Newton
Because I think a lot of times people think if we start in person, we have to stay in person or something like that. So it’s like, yeah, you can still have in-person events and meet clients that way and then serve them virtually and not have to have a brick and mortar or an office that they come to. Which, yeah, it’s it’s actually not only convenient for you, but it’s convenient for the client because they don’t have to travel.
00;41;40;05 – 00;41;58;13
Lauren Brollier Newton
Because if you think about like in the old days when that was the only way that you could do it, you might have to travel 30 minutes, go to your session, travel another 30 minutes. You might take 2 or 3 hours of your day to try to receive coaching in that model. So it’s really, really good for our clients to be able to work with us in a virtual setting.
00;41;58;16 – 00;42;00;28
Anne Oyen
Absolutely, yes.
00;42;01;01 – 00;42;23;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
So I want to hear a little bit about, hiring your first employees. Most coaches on the planet will not have ever have employees because they haven’t yet gotten themselves to that level. And a lot of people who are ready to do it, like some of the more successful coaches, let the fear that somehow they’re not gonna be able to pay the employee or it’s not going to work, get to them.
00;42;23;14 – 00;42;29;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
So I’d love to hear a little bit about your journey. How did you know when it was the right time to hire someone for the first time?
00;42;29;15 – 00;42;30;16
Anne Oyen
00;42;30;18 – 00;42;35;09
Anne Oyen
Good question. And I do believe also for some coaches, it’s not.
00;42;35;12 – 00;42;35;21
Anne Oyen
What.
00;42;35;21 – 00;42;41;12
Anne Oyen
They would love. I talked to people who have their own business, and I feel like, I, I would not love to have a.
00;42;41;12 – 00;42;44;24
Anne Oyen
Team and, and not to lead.
00;42;44;26 – 00;42;52;17
Anne Oyen
A team like that. So I think it’s the model is different for everyone. For me, it started with that.
00;42;52;20 – 00;42;55;11
Anne Oyen
00;42;55;13 – 00;43;02;02
Anne Oyen
I just, I felt like there was so many administrative things, that took the.
00;43;02;04 – 00;43;02;18
Anne Oyen
Focus.
00;43;02;18 – 00;43;17;01
Anne Oyen
Away from the coaching and delivering what I wanted to deliver, helping people in that way. So the first thing I did was I, I didn’t or hire, but I, I kind of I paid for, let’s say.
00;43;17;04 – 00;43;17;09
Anne Oyen
A.
00;43;17;09 – 00;43;28;08
Anne Oyen
Person, she was a student and she worked for me ten hours a week. And, that was just amazing. She would answer my.
00;43;28;08 – 00;43;30;29
Anne Oyen
Emails, when.
00;43;31;02 – 00;43;40;07
Anne Oyen
You know, a lot of the administrative things with, online course, portals, and things like that.
00;43;40;09 – 00;43;41;20
Anne Oyen
So that’s where I started.
00;43;41;20 – 00;43;42;16
Anne Oyen
And I didn’t pay her.
00;43;42;16 – 00;43;43;05
Anne Oyen
Much.
00;43;43;08 – 00;44;05;25
Anne Oyen
It was like a low. She was a student, and she was obviously not to, you know, she was not looking for, a full time job. She wanted to have this to, have an extra job and also learn some new things while she was studying. And then we both knew that when she’s done with her studies, she’s going to go find another job.
00;44;05;28 – 00;44;33;20
Anne Oyen
And then I started after a while, and this was not from the beginning. So it was a couple of years, and I started to get a lot of clients at some point where I felt that I can’t I don’t even know who are my clients now. There are too many people that I can follow them up personally. So I went from having a very personal relationship with all of my clients.
00;44;33;20 – 00;44;35;00
Anne Oyen
To.
00;44;35;02 – 00;44;36;21
Anne Oyen
At some point having.
00;44;36;21 – 00;44;38;17
Anne Oyen
Larger groups.
00;44;38;19 – 00;44;48;24
Anne Oyen
And I didn’t know what was going on with them, and I didn’t feel good. I felt like, you know, maybe they are struggling, maybe they don’t do the program at all because they feel alone.
00;44;48;24 – 00;44;49;26
Anne Oyen
And they, you.
00;44;49;26 – 00;44;52;15
Anne Oyen
Know, the paradigms got to them. So I.
00;44;52;15 – 00;44;53;17
Anne Oyen
Thought it would.
00;44;53;17 – 00;44;55;11
Anne Oyen
Be great to have a person.
00;44;55;14 – 00;44;59;22
Anne Oyen
Who could call them not coach.
00;44;59;22 – 00;45;19;19
Anne Oyen
But more like a concierge person. How are you doing? You know, just check in, check in with them. That was one thing. And another thing was like, I felt like I could even if I had that person ten hours a week, I felt like I could never really log off. That was my feeling. You know, there’s always something I need to.
00;45;19;19 – 00;45;21;06
Anne Oyen
To to.
00;45;21;08 – 00;45;24;15
Anne Oyen
Kind of be present for my clients.
00;45;24;18 – 00;45;24;23
Anne Oyen
All.
00;45;24;23 – 00;45;25;19
Anne Oyen
The time.
00;45;25;21 – 00;45;28;08
Anne Oyen
So I felt, oh, it was it.
00;45;28;08 – 00;45;36;10
Anne Oyen
Would be great to have a person who knows everything about the business and who can do things while I’m on vacation, or I don’t need to.
00;45;36;10 – 00;45;37;12
Anne Oyen
Be.
00;45;37;14 – 00;45;46;05
Anne Oyen
Fully present all the time. So that’s when I hired one person to do all of these things.
00;45;46;08 – 00;45;50;24
Anne Oyen
And more. Yeah. Calling. And she, you.
00;45;50;24 – 00;45;54;02
Anne Oyen
Know, I didn’t give her a script or anything. I just said.
00;45;54;04 – 00;45;57;23
Anne Oyen
Here’s the list, please call them and check up on them.
00;45;57;25 – 00;46;07;25
Anne Oyen
So she helped me create a structure and like, manuscript for how to do this, like a program like, yeah.
00;46;07;27 – 00;46;10;27
Lauren Brollier Newton
Yeah, like a standard operating procedure or a protocol.
00;46;10;27 – 00;46;11;09
Anne Oyen
Yeah.
00;46;11;12 – 00;46;17;15
Anne Oyen
Well, you could say. Yeah. So she helped me do that. That was amazing. So. Yeah.
00;46;17;18 – 00;46;24;25
Anne Oyen
And that was that was the beginning. And, Yeah. Was, absolutely.
00;46;24;25 – 00;46;29;18
Anne Oyen
When you start having someone in your team and, you know, you’re.
00;46;29;20 – 00;46;30;10
Anne Oyen
You know, you.
00;46;30;10 – 00;46;31;08
Anne Oyen
Need to pay them.
00;46;31;08 – 00;46;35;11
Anne Oyen
Obviously. And it’s it’s another level.
00;46;35;11 – 00;46;38;13
Anne Oyen
Of,
00;46;38;15 – 00;46;41;15
Anne Oyen
What’s the word,
00;46;41;17 – 00;46;50;11
Anne Oyen
Responsibility. Responsibility. Because when it’s, it’s like, well, I can always manage, but yeah.
00;46;50;13 – 00;46;52;18
Anne Oyen
I want to put in my team.
00;46;52;21 – 00;47;18;20
Lauren Brollier Newton
I remember when I hired my first employees, the fear was that I wasn’t going to be able to pay them, or I was going to, like, somehow the business was going to shrink because I was now having to pay this person whatever. And it’s so funny because every time I just got over the fear and hired, the business grew, because now I had more time to be in my zone of genius, and they had the opportunity to be in their zone of genius, which is great.
00;47;18;20 – 00;47;36;28
Lauren Brollier Newton
I mean, that’s the power of it is like, I might not be the best at this, but like the administrative things, I could do it. But like, am I like the person who’s like, yay, I’m making a, you know, administrative, protocol? No. So it’s like, let someone who loves that do it. And then you do the things that are in your zone of genius.
00;47;37;00 – 00;47;38;05
Anne Oyen
Absolutely. Yeah.
00;47;38;06 – 00;47;41;08
Anne Oyen
I never regretted,
00;47;41;10 – 00;47;47;18
Anne Oyen
You know, expanding my my team. Absolutely. And, also, that’s the growth.
00;47;47;21 – 00;47;48;16
Anne Oyen
00;47;48;18 – 00;48;00;25
Anne Oyen
Growth area always for me to when I feel scared about not having enough money, stuff like that. I know it’s not really about the money. It’s about.
00;48;00;25 – 00;48;01;27
Anne Oyen
Me.
00;48;02;00 – 00;48;04;19
Anne Oyen
Not really trusting the infinite to.
00;48;04;21 – 00;48;05;26
Anne Oyen
To.
00;48;05;28 – 00;48;22;00
Anne Oyen
Support me in every way. Because at some point, at some, some part of me knows that everything is is here for me. It’s no need to worry. And then a part of me can get scared, and then I know, okay, there’s the growth potential.
00;48;22;02 – 00;48;22;15
Anne Oyen
00;48;22;17 – 00;48;25;26
Anne Oyen
For me at that point, to know that.
00;48;25;28 – 00;48;26;28
Anne Oyen
Real.
00;48;27;00 – 00;48;29;26
Anne Oyen
What is it? Mary Moore is the. I heard her say a couple of times.
00;48;29;26 – 00;48;32;11
Anne Oyen
Really?
00;48;32;13 – 00;48;36;19
Anne Oyen
Feeling of safety. It’s not in a job.
00;48;36;19 – 00;48;37;04
Anne Oyen
Or.
00;48;37;04 – 00;48;41;09
Anne Oyen
The money in your bank account or out there in the conditions. It’s in your.
00;48;41;09 – 00;48;42;20
Anne Oyen
Knowing.
00;48;42;22 – 00;48;46;11
Anne Oyen
That you are always connected to the infinite source.
00;48;46;14 – 00;48;48;29
Anne Oyen
Yes, always. That’s where we feel.
00;48;48;29 – 00;48;51;09
Anne Oyen
Safe really authentically.
00;48;51;11 – 00;48;51;19
Anne Oyen
00;48;51;27 – 00;49;11;01
Lauren Brollier Newton
Yeah. Because if otherwise, you know, there’s a scripture in the Bible that says and I share this not as a religious story, but more as a teaching story. There’s a scripture in the Bible where it says, if you build your house on sand, when the wind and waves come, it’ll always get knocked down. But if you build your house on rock, you know you’ll always stand.
00;49;11;08 – 00;49;18;10
Lauren Brollier Newton
And the the the challenge with feeling safe when you have the right amount of money in your savings account, or feeling safe because this or that.
00;49;18;13 – 00;49;19;05
Anne Oyen
Is that.
00;49;19;08 – 00;49;35;04
Lauren Brollier Newton
All of that can get taken away from you. I mean, a government, a war, a, anything can happen, a tornado, I mean, anything outside of us that we’re depending on can safe from safety, can be stripped from us in ways that we can’t control.
00;49;35;06 – 00;49;37;22
Anne Oyen
But if that. But if I know.
00;49;37;24 – 00;49;57;23
Lauren Brollier Newton
Deep down inside that there’s one thing that can never been taken from me is my thinking, my connection to source, my spirit. Well, then I’m good with all the other stuff. That’s such a powerful point that you bring and that if we’re feeling lack, it’s because we’re not connected to the source of abundance, not because there actually is lack.
00;49;57;26 – 00;50;14;05
Anne Oyen
And I want to share another thing about that, because, to be honest, in the beginning, when I resigned my my corporate job and started my own business, I was I was terrified about not having enough money.
00;50;14;08 – 00;50;23;06
Anne Oyen
It was in my body like I would wake up in the morning and my body would be like, stiff. I burning.
00;50;23;13 – 00;50;26;15
Anne Oyen
I had this burning sensation in between my shoulder blades.
00;50;26;17 – 00;50;28;14
Anne Oyen
So I was really in.
00;50;28;16 – 00;50;37;01
Anne Oyen
Almost in panic mode. But luckily I already had learned enough to know that this is about my thinking. It’s not.
00;50;37;01 – 00;50;38;09
Anne Oyen
About.
00;50;38;11 – 00;50;45;26
Anne Oyen
Anything else than my thinking, so it doesn’t help to go back to the old job. It doesn’t help me to do that. What helps me now.
00;50;45;28 – 00;50;46;28
Anne Oyen
Is to keep.
00;50;47;00 – 00;50;53;21
Anne Oyen
Using the principles, using the tools. Finding a way in me where I can feel safe no matter.
00;50;53;21 – 00;50;54;26
Anne Oyen
What goes.
00;50;54;26 – 00;51;13;28
Anne Oyen
On. And I started asking myself, am I okay now? Am I okay now? Do I have food in my refrigerator? Do I have a bed? Am I okay now? Yes, I’m okay now and then what would I love? And what’s one step I can take? What? What can I do with what I have from where I am? And.
00;51;14;01 – 00;51;24;15
Anne Oyen
And that’s you know, everything just worked out for the best. But it was really, challenging. Absolutely. But I love a good challenge because it.
00;51;24;17 – 00;51;27;09
Anne Oyen
You know, you might make it.
00;51;27;12 – 00;51;46;14
Lauren Brollier Newton
You know, that’s for sure. So what I’d love to hear. And this is something that’s always kind of fascinated me when I first started studying, with Mary Morrissey and the Brave Thinking Institute, I was always curious about what’s Mary reading? What’s she writing in her journal? What is Kiersten? Well, studying. What is she? That’s our master coach.
00;51;46;14 – 00;52;05;04
Lauren Brollier Newton
For those of you who don’t know, what’s she writing in her journal? Because it seems like rarefied air when someone not only gets to the level of business that they’re generating millions of dollars and helping thousands of people, but you have to have a level of spiritual and personal development awareness in order to be able to create that result.
00;52;05;06 – 00;52;24;04
Lauren Brollier Newton
And so I’m always curious about what is someone playing at your level doing to continue their own personal development? Because one thing I know for sure is that the crowd gets thin at this level. Meaning like there’s not a lot of people on the planet who study personal development at this level perform at this level. So what are you doing?
00;52;24;04 – 00;52;35;20
Lauren Brollier Newton
Like if I, if I open to an audience journal or if I looked into your vision, what are some of the things you’re doing as a spiritual and personal development practice?
00;52;35;23 – 00;52;38;08
Anne Oyen
Yes. For that question.
00;52;38;11 – 00;52;45;12
Anne Oyen
I do have a journaling practice every morning. I actually created my own journal. I wish I had one here right now.
00;52;45;14 – 00;52;46;11
Anne Oyen
Well, I don’t.
00;52;46;11 – 00;52;47;27
Anne Oyen
But I created my own journal.
00;52;47;27 – 00;52;50;28
Anne Oyen
With, that goes through.
00;52;50;28 – 00;53;16;09
Anne Oyen
Like a gratitude list. Who do I want to be today? Actions. Steps. What am I proud of? Some. Some things. But I journal on every every morning. And actually now I set, I have set aside that journal for a while because I’m doing, program with John Boggs, the brave thinking leader. And he has another kind of very similar but a little bit different journaling practice.
00;53;16;09 – 00;53;42;26
Anne Oyen
So I’m exploring that now. And, so I love doing that journaling in the morning, I put on some music that helps me connect with with my higher power, kind of a music where I feel like it’s I am opening up for that. And that’s the most important thing that I do and that I do sometimes I do, meditation also, I usually will do some kind of a physical thing because I believe.
00;53;42;26 – 00;53;44;04
Anne Oyen
It’s really important.
00;53;44;04 – 00;53;45;20
Anne Oyen
To also.
00;53;45;26 – 00;53;48;09
Anne Oyen
Both warm up to the mind and.
00;53;48;11 – 00;54;03;16
Anne Oyen
And get the mind into a frequency, but also the body. So I do something transcendence or yoga, something to, to get my body going. And then I usually read something. I always study a book and I will, will.
00;54;03;16 – 00;54;04;16
Anne Oyen
Read.
00;54;04;19 – 00;54;15;29
Anne Oyen
How much time I do have until I need to to get going into my day. And, these days I’m actually reading a book that is both, spiritual.
00;54;16;01 – 00;54;17;06
Anne Oyen
And.
00;54;17;08 – 00;54;25;21
Anne Oyen
It’s a spiritual way of becoming a person. Better salesperson actually isn’t.
00;54;25;24 – 00;54;25;27
Anne Oyen
The.
00;54;25;27 – 00;54;31;28
Anne Oyen
Greatest salesman in the world. The greatest salesman. And it’s really it’s beautiful. Yeah.
00;54;32;01 – 00;54;34;01
Anne Oyen
So that’s what I’m reading these.
00;54;34;01 – 00;54;36;03
Lauren Brollier Newton
I love that, and I love that.
00;54;36;09 – 00;54;40;01
Anne Oyen
Just all about the starving and,
00;54;40;03 – 00;54;42;09
Anne Oyen
Not the getting, but the giving.
00;54;42;12 – 00;54;58;18
Lauren Brollier Newton
I love that argument. Dino is the author of greatest in the world. Yeah, I love that I’ve read that for so long. Thank you for reminding me of that powerful. It’s I have in my recollection, it’s like scrolls. He is, is it? He’s taking on something in each of these scrolls that he receives. Right.
00;54;58;24 – 00;54;59;15
Anne Oyen
00;54;59;18 – 00;55;18;14
Lauren Brollier Newton
I love that, so powerful. So. And I to ask you two final questions. One that I ask to every guest who comes on the podcast. So you are building a coaching business from the ground up, meaning you don’t have an email list you don’t have. You might have your certification and your wisdom, but you’re building completely from scratch.
00;55;18;16 – 00;55;22;27
Lauren Brollier Newton
What would be the first move that you would make?
00;55;22;29 – 00;55;25;19
Anne Oyen
The first move was, would be to.
00;55;25;19 – 00;55;30;19
Anne Oyen
Ask if I were this, successful coach that I would love to be.
00;55;30;21 – 00;55;31;00
Anne Oyen
What?
00;55;31;04 – 00;55;36;16
Anne Oyen
What would I do? I would coach because I think many people think I need to have.
00;55;36;16 – 00;55;37;17
Anne Oyen
A.
00;55;37;19 – 00;55;45;28
Anne Oyen
Perfect website and yada, all these things. But okay, so if I’m coaching, what am I doing?
00;55;45;28 – 00;55;53;14
Anne Oyen
So I think to. Yeah, actually,
00;55;53;16 – 00;55;55;07
Anne Oyen
Offering something to.
00;55;55;07 – 00;55;56;13
Anne Oyen
People.
00;55;56;15 – 00;56;05;18
Anne Oyen
Like, a what it can be a workshop. It could be a torch, something where you can show or a webinar.
00;56;05;18 – 00;56;05;29
Anne Oyen
Or.
00;56;06;02 – 00;56;08;05
Anne Oyen
Something where you can can.
00;56;08;07 – 00;56;09;10
Anne Oyen
Give your.
00;56;09;12 – 00;56;11;06
Anne Oyen
Give value.
00;56;11;08 – 00;56;12;18
Anne Oyen
First of all, give.
00;56;12;18 – 00;56;19;22
Anne Oyen
Value, and then offer something more to people who want more. And I just want to remind.
00;56;19;22 – 00;56;20;13
Anne Oyen
That the.
00;56;20;13 – 00;56;38;04
Anne Oyen
First webinar I did, I didn’t have a script, I just I just was inspired by some stories and I just did something and I got maybe one client, I got one client from that. So that was the beginning, and it was probably not a very good webinar when it comes to how.
00;56;38;04 – 00;56;41;05
Anne Oyen
You should structure a webinar.
00;56;41;07 – 00;56;55;09
Anne Oyen
But I think I was just really inspired and motivated, and it was enough to to kind of sign up my first client. So I think, yeah, how can you bring value to people.
00;56;55;11 – 00;56;57;16
Anne Oyen
Through a workshop.
00;56;57;18 – 00;57;07;11
Anne Oyen
Through a talk, even to through, video on Facebook? How can you start bringing value and then offering people to connect.
00;57;07;11 – 00;57;15;15
Anne Oyen
With you through, like a, session and then you don’t have to have.
00;57;15;18 – 00;57;29;02
Anne Oyen
You know, it’s yes, it’s good to have a program that you can offer. I love that we have that in Brave Thinking Institute I had done for. It’s very done for you. You have the script, you have the program. It’s really easy. So obviously that’s the.
00;57;29;04 – 00;57;31;22
Anne Oyen
You know, a good way to go. But if.
00;57;31;22 – 00;57;33;01
Anne Oyen
You don’t have that, you can.
00;57;33;01 – 00;57;35;03
Anne Oyen
Start, you know, week by week.
00;57;35;03 – 00;57;50;11
Anne Oyen
Creating something, giving some value. You don’t have to have everything worked out before you get going. I think that’s the that’s the trap that many people fall into, is I have to have everything ready before I take the first step. And no, really not we.
00;57;50;11 – 00;57;51;14
Anne Oyen
Just one step.
00;57;51;14 – 00;57;52;20
Anne Oyen
At a time.
00;57;52;23 – 00;58;11;11
Lauren Brollier Newton
I love that and coaches coach and you don’t have to have everything ready. And I would say if you asked and and I do we we have do we know everything and do we have it all worked out. We’d be like no, absolutely not. And where can people find you if they want to get in contact with you after listening to this podcast?
00;58;11;14 – 00;58;16;26
Anne Oyen
Yes. So, most of my material obviously is in Norwegian, but if there’s someone listening.
00;58;16;26 – 00;58;20;23
Anne Oyen
Who does understand Norwegian.
00;58;20;25 – 00;58;26;17
Anne Oyen
I have a YouTube chAnneel. So that could be a, a great way to go.
00;58;26;20 – 00;58;27;26
Anne Oyen
And,
00;58;27;28 – 00;58;36;29
Anne Oyen
So you can just, Google my name on YouTube. I’m sure you’ll, you’ll find it there. I also have the have a website. Is there somewhere we can put some some links.
00;58;36;29 – 00;58;38;14
Anne Oyen
Or we don’t have some links?
00;58;38;14 – 00;58;41;05
Anne Oyen
Yeah, I think that’s that would be easier.
00;58;41;08 – 00;58;43;14
Anne Oyen
Perfect. I have to spell it.
00;58;43;17 – 00;58;58;12
Lauren Brollier Newton
I get lost in translation. Perfect. So there’ll be show links linked under this episode. And and thank you for providing so much value today. I know so many people are going to be served by this, and we appreciate you so much. And we just love you very much. And for the work you do in the world.
00;58;58;14 – 00;59;00;04
Anne Oyen
Thank you. It’s been a pleasure.
00;59;00;04 – 00;59;03;12
Anne Oyen
It’s been a pleasure, Lauren. Thank you so much. All right.
00;59;03;18 – 00;59;07;25
Lauren Brollier Newton
We’ll see you on the next episode.

Workshops and public speaking played a key role in Anne’s business success. Even for virtual coaches, live events—whether online or in-person—are one of the most effective ways to build trust and attract clients.
Why live events work:
Like many new coaches, Anne struggled with pricing her services. She started by charging very little but quickly realized that clients are more committed when they make a meaningful investment.
How Anne overcame money fears:
Many coaches hesitate to hire help, but Anne’s business grew significantly once she started delegating tasks. By outsourcing administrative work and client support, she freed up more time to focus on coaching and expanding her business.
