John Boggs Explains the 3 R’s to Make This Your Best Month Ever
As a trainer, coach and expert faculty member, and CEO of Brave Thinking Institute, I find that the last few days of every month can be critical.
Not only can business owners use this time to determine whether or not they accomplish their goals for that month, but they can also use the time to start the next month off strong.
Have The Best Month Ever in Your Business and Life
If you aren’t consistently hitting your goals each month, and you’re not quite sure why, incorporate the following three practices to make this your best month ever.
1. Review
A couple of days BEFORE the end of every month, block out some time on your calendar to review where you are when it comes to your goals.
For example, let’s say you started out the month with a particular goal that you wanted to achieve, whether it be a personal or business goal.
What you want to determine is if you’re on track to hit your goal by the end of the month.
If not, with just a couple of days left, look to see if there’s any possibility of making a massive shift that will move you from being just shy of your goal to achieving your goal.
Another key reason why I highly recommend doing a review at the end of each month is because, not only do you have an opportunity to see how to achieve your current monthly goal, but more importantly, you may be able to make a difference in how the next month will start. I call this building momentum.
Often, people (especially in the sales industry) will put themselves in a position where they miss their goal one month, and they say to themselves,
“Well, I’ll just wait until next month. I’ll be successful then…”
The challenge with this type of thinking is that, if you wait until next month, then you start working on your next goal from a dead stop instead of hitting the ground running.
And the best way to make sure you hit the ground running is to start before the month begins so that you’ve built up momentum.
2. Recalibrate
To recalibrate, ask yourself two important questions:
- What did I do last month that worked?
- What did I do last month that didn’t work?
Don’t minimize your wins or catastrophize your losses.
When you minimize, you risk starting the next month off resting on your laurels, trying to live off the glory of the previous month.
And when you catastrophize, it becomes more difficult to remain optimistic, because you spend all your time focused on the negative.
Once you become clear on what worked well and what didn’t work well, then ask yourself:
- What am I going to do more of in the month ahead?
- What am I going to do less of in the month ahead?
The bottom line: Start fresh every single month and finish your recalibration with a plan of action.
3. Refresh
Achieving your goals isn’t about how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up.
We’ve all heard some variation of this and the truth is that in order to get back up, it’s essential to refresh your energy – even (and maybe more importantly) if you’ve had a great month.
For example, take a 20 minute walk, plan a get together with friends or read something other than a book on business! T
he power of strategically refreshing both your brain and body will most likely even help you see a situation in a new way.
