Tapping into your creative way to become a transformational leader
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain
What is a person of increase?
If you haven’t heard this term before, it’s important for anyone who wants to be a transformational leader. To me, being a person of increase is a key requirement to have a successful life in any capacity. A person of increase is someone who heightens the abundance around them.
This creates an atmosphere of “anything is possible” for you and everyone who works with you.
So what does that mean exactly?
Have you ever been around someone who just makes you feel like you can accomplish anything? You feel charged up and full of energy from your exchanges with them. They make you feel inspired. THAT is a person of increase.
We often talk about the opposite. You know, those people who drain the energy out of you. They make you tired, irritated, or put you on a lower vibration. Some might say they are psychic vampires. Typically, those people don’t know they’re doing it. But their vibrations are so low, their thinking so negative, that they change the very environment around them.
If you’ve ever walked into a room where two people had been arguing or there was some conflict between them, you can feel the tension in the air. You don’t have to hear the conversation to get that low or negative feeling.
But today we’re not going to concentrate on the people who sap your energy. I want to talk about what a person of increase is and how you can cultivate those traits in yourself.
Showing up as a person of increase is part of cultivating that abundant mindset that makes you a successful leader. Honestly, it also improves the entire flow of your life.
What Is a Person of Increase?
The phrase a “person of increase” comes from the Wallace D Wattles book, The Science of Getting Rich. It’s a short book that Wattles wrote at the beginning of the 20th century, but it had a resounding impact on my life and many lives around the world.
Wattles talks about more than just money in the book. He discusses the mindset of wealth and how money is only part of the wavelength of true wealth.
When he coined the phrase, “person of increase” he was referring to a person who was truly abundant in every one of the four quadrants of their lifetime and money freedom, health and well-being, love and relationships, and vocation. At Brave Thinking Institute, we call this full-spectrum success.
According to Wattles, a person of increase is someone who activates abundance in their life and circulates that abundance to everyone else. To do this, you must realize that you are coming from a creative center and that center gives off an increase of abundance, not only for yourself but for everyone around you.
Wattles theories here are featured in the hit movie and best-selling book The Secret and a large part of what we teach at Brave Thinking Institute. We know that each one of us is far more powerful and contains more potential than any circumstance, situation, or condition. This is actually one of our core values.
Wattles said that we are each creative centers and when we recognize that, we give increase to everyone and everything around us. Part of this is in recognizing what your purpose is and having faith or conviction that you are advancing toward that purpose. When you do this, when you adopt that abundant faith, you’re also giving that abundance to those around you. You raise the very level of the vibration in your vicinity.
Why Is It Important to Be a Person of Increase?
The truth is that you have creative powers. You were endowed with creativity, no matter who you are or what traits you believe you have. Some people naturally think of themselves as creators. Others don’t see how truly powerful they are.
In reality, you are creating the life you are living, whether by design or default. When Wallace Wattles talked about being a person of increase, he said that we all have the creative way. Wattles said that there is a thinking stuff from which all things are made.
This is an absolute truth when you live, move, and have your being in an infinite universe. You have the creative way, whether you use it or not. To have an abundant life, and give that abundance to others, you must tap into the creative way.
You do have the ability to bring a creative mindset into your day. No matter what you are facing.
For some of us, this might sound a little foreign. We think of creativity as something that belongs to artists or architects. In a real way, you are. You’re creating and designing your life by your thoughts.
You can use this idea of being a person of increase and it’s absolutely aligned with what it means to be a transformational leader.
When you consider that leadership is a choice, you know that the decision to lead others comes with certain responsibilities. One of the things you’re signing up for in leadership is taking responsibility for supporting your team as they grow and achieve beyond their wildest dreams. You’re bringing them into abundance.
Setting Your Intention
I’m going to take you on a little journey to show you how I get into the mindset to be a person of increase.
This is a place where I feel most at peace and can set my own intentions.
I’m going to walk you through my process and you can borrow the scenery that works best for me or substitute something more personal for you.
On this beautiful morning, the sun peeks up on the horizon, casting gorgeous hues of vibrant color in the sky. Dark waves of the sea burst with brilliant dots of reflected light from the gently rising sun. The inky blackness of deep night rises up beyond my vision as it fades into the bright blues of a clear day bringing focus to a new beginning.
I feel so blessed to be standing here with the scent of saltwater filling the breeze.
On the right side, I look over the vast expanse of the Sea of Cortez. As I turn the other way, I have a perfect view of the world-famous Land’s End. I study the massive arch, my eyes drifting past it to the immense, seemingly infinite horizon of the Pacific Ocean.
Standing on the mountaintop, I feel a sense of calm and peace. I breathe deeply and focus my attention on the day and moment I’m in. I quiet my mind and push out all of the little thoughts that often keep me so busy.
Instead, I focus my intention, calling Infinite Intelligence, universal energy, God, and life itself to help me. My intention is to be a person of increase with every thought, every action, and every interaction. I ask for the universe’s help in being that person who contributes more, is looking for solutions, and finds a way to create more blessings in our world. I set my vision for this expansive way of being.
Today, I invite you to set yours.
Bob Proctor and The Science of Getting Rich
It might not surprise you that our friend and mentor, the late Bob Proctor, was a man of increase. In fact, that was how I opened the blog post to celebrate his life. At Brave Thinking Institute, we were truly grateful to work with and learn from Bob. He was a mentor to my mother and Brave Thinking Institute Founder, Mary Morrissey. She was honored to have the privilege to see him off as he ascended to “All That Is Life” and take part in his lovely celebration of life event.
The first self-help book Bob ever read was The Science of Getting Rich, and those lessons helped lead him on the lifelong path to not only increase his own abundance but to teach those lessons to millions. In fact, he was able to teach his lessons in every country in the world.
Bob taught us that the circumstances of our lives were not important.
It was our mindset that made a difference in our lives. He said that the only things necessary for true change were access to the power within our mind and the ability to wield that power in alignment with the Universal Laws that govern success.
As a student of Bob’s teachings, you become a person of increase. You can easily access abundance and circulate it in your own life and other peoples’ lives. If you attended Bob’s celebration of life, you know that one of the common denominators in the many shared memories was a running theme of his unwavering generosity.

You’ve learned what a person of increase is, and where the phrase came from, but do you know how to become one?
There are a few hints from the people I’ve mentioned that you might recognize. Wattles and Bob Proctor were both men of increase.
