Reasons Why You May Want to Leave Corporate America
Study. Get good grades. Get a good job.
Society has taught us that getting a job was the only option to make a living – the “thing you do” as a responsible adult.
So most people live inside the paradigm of working 9-5, without considering other options.
Yet lately, you’ve been feeling discontent in your job, longing for something different.
Perhaps you feel guilty or selfish for wanting more. You look at your career, your income, or your company’s benefits and realize that other people would dream of being in your position…
“Why would I throw this all away?”
You’ve worked hard to be where you are, and it can be unsettling to feel that it was all “for nothing.”
Or maybe you’re unsatisfied with your job, or at the brink of burnout. For the first time in your life you’re considering that changing companies to land your “dream job” will not be enough to give you what your soul is craving…
But you fear that if you give up the stability of a paycheck, you won’t be able to keep the lifestyle you’re used to.
You may have even explored alternative options like remote work or joined a consulting business, but something was missing.
Let me assure you that you’re not alone – and leaving corporate to live your dreams isn’t a selfish whim, it can be the most rewarding career decision you make.
(And no, it’s not too late for you to consider a mid-life career change!)
However, I must also be clear that starting a business is not for everybody…
And yes, even if you love your career you may get the occasional “Sunday scaries.”
So before you quit your day job, let’s explore the deeper reasons why you may want to leave the corporate world to become a coach – and find out if it’s the right career move for you in the long term.
Meaningful Vocation
Imagine waking up every day excited about the work you do.
Yes, it IS possible!
Many people assume that all work is mind-numbing, unfulfilling, or stagnant – the price you have to pay to make a living.
But that’s not true.
Our faculty member Mat Boggs says, “Your profession is what you get paid for, your purpose is what you’re made for… and as a coach you get to have both.”
And I couldn’t agree more.
In corporate life, it’s easy to feel like a cog in the machine, drowning in busy-work, not seeing the impact of your contribution – but as a coach, you get to make a direct impact in people’s lives.
You’ll help others grow, transform, and achieve their dreams, which is profoundly fulfilling. Your work will be your passion, and your passion will be your work.
This may be the main driver for a change in your case – and you can discover the 5 signs that it’s time to find a fulfilling career here.
Time Freedom
This is one of the most impactful changes that new coaches experience after they leave a corporate job and change career paths.
Leaving corporate America offers you the time freedom you’ve always dreamed of.
No more trying to squeeze medical appointments on your lunch break or rushing through dinner to answer emails. You’ll have the flexibility to create your own schedule, spend quality time with your loved ones, and take care of yourself.
Greater Abundance
When you step into a coaching career, you open the door to greater abundance.
There’s no glass ceiling in coaching – you’re not limited by a salary or a rigid career ladder.
You don’t have to work more hours to earn more or be at the mercy of your superiors to earn a promotion.
Instead, the potential for financial growth as a coach is unlimited, and it’s directly tied to the value you bring and the people you help. It’s a win-win situation!
How to Leave Your Corporate Job: Your Exit Strategy in 6 Steps
Now that you’ve decided you want to follow your purpose and start a career as a full-time coach, you may be wondering how to leave corporate America and asking yourself:
“How do I leave my job?”
Well, I got you covered. There are 6 essential steps to follow that will help you step into your new career smoothly. Let’s dive in!
1. Create a Vision for Your Dream
First and foremost, you need to get clear on what your dream looks like.
What kind of coach do you want to be? Who do you want to help? What does your ideal day look like?
Visualization is a powerful tool to build a life (and career) you love. Create a vision board, write in a journal, or meditate on your dream. Having a clear vision will guide your steps and keep you motivated.
Once your vision is clear, break it down into actionable steps.
What do you need to do to make this dream a reality? This might include getting certified, building a business plan, or creating a social media marketing strategy.
Having a plan will help you avoid overwhelm, and keep you on track moving in the direction of your dream.
2. Adopt The Right Mindset
I can’t stress this enough: the journey from corporate America to your dream vocation starts with your mindset.
It’s easy to get caught up in doubts and fears – What if it doesn’t work? What if the market is oversaturated?
This can be especially true if everybody around you is an employee and you can’t see “proof” that succeeding as an entrepreneur is actually possible.
Instead of focusing on reasons it won’t work, ask yourself, “How can I make it work?”
When you make it a habit to look for opportunities, you’ll discover that starting a new career can be simpler than you thought at first.
3. Prepare Your Finances
Financial security is crucial when leaving your corporate job.
Create a cushion that will cover your living expenses for several months. This will give you peace of mind and the freedom to focus on building a business without the immediate pressure of making money.
Cut unnecessary expenses, save diligently, and perhaps start your coaching business as a side hustle while you’re still at your day job.
4. Empower Yourself with the Right Skills
To succeed as a coach, you need to have the right skills – not just coaching skills but also business skills like marketing, sales, and financial management.
Consider investing in courses, certifications, and workshops. The more you learn, the more confident and prepared you’ll be to make your dream a reality.
Remember, building a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Equip yourself with the knowledge and tools you need for the long term.
Insider secret: the coaching skills you’ll learn will help you fast-track your success in any project you undertake!
5. Put Yourself Out There
Visibility is key when starting a coaching business – and unless YOU tell the world about it, no one will know!
So let people know who you are and what you do.
Don’t be afraid to talk about yourself – this is how you attract aligned clients.
In the beginning, focus on sales activities and building relationships with potential clients (your website or a professional photoshoot aren’t crucial at this point.)
Let friends and family know about your new venture; word of mouth can be powerful.
Network with other coaches and professionals, attend events, and be active on social media. And before you let your lack of experience stop you, remember that all you have to do is share your journey, your insights, and your services.
6. Saying Goodbye to Your Day Job
Finally, you’ll reach a point where it’s time to leave your corporate job and fully commit to your coaching business.
But how do you know when it’s the right time?
Look at your current situation objectively – do you have enough savings to support yourself for a few months? Do you have a steady stream of clients or a solid plan to get them?
Trust your intuition. When you feel ready and confident, make the leap.
