Let’s talk about “success mindset.” Esepcially if the idea of becoming the abundant coach you dream of can feel inspiring one minute…
And completely overwhelming the next! When self-doubt creeps in. You might wonder, “Do I really have what it takes?” or “How will I find clients who trust me?”
But here’s what I’ve learned: The journey to becoming an abundant coach isn’t about skills alone—it starts with transforming your mindset. If you want to achieve success, you must first lay the foundation with a success mindset.
In this article, we’ll explore how to change your mindset to be successful. You’ll get tools, step-by-step guidance, and inspiration to help you create long-term results in your coaching career. Whether you’re a brand new coach or looking for a new level of success in your business, this is the place to start!
Why Mindset Matters More Than You Think
Before I started coaching, I thought success would come from the strategies I learned to use. I believed that if I mastered the right marketing tactics, sales funnels, and social media hacks, my business would take off. But I quickly realized that no strategy works if you don’t have the right mindset to back it up. Mindset is everything.
And that’s not just motivational fluff—it’s backed by research!
Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, explains the power of a growth mindset. People with a growth mindset believe they can learn and grow through effort. They view challenges as opportunities, not roadblocks.
On the flip side, those with a fixed mindset believe their abilities are set in stone. Her research shows that the type of mindset people have impacts how they respond to challenges, what risks they’re willing to take, and even how soon they’re likely to give up on a new endeavor.
As a coach, your mindset affects everything—your confidence, your ability to attract clients, and how you handle setbacks. Cultivating a growth mindset is essential for building resilience, embracing challenges, and achieving your goals.
Shifting Your Mindset for Success: The First Steps
Shifting your mindset starts with awareness. If you’re like most people, you have negative thought patterns that creep in whenever you start stepping outside your comfort zone. These negative mindsets can sound like:
- “I’m not good enough to do this.”
- “No one will want to work with me.”
- “What if I fail?”
- “It didn’t work before. Why bother trying again?”
- “What if they think I’m stupid for trying?”
These thoughts are rooted in limiting beliefs that no longer serve you. The good news? You can reprogram your mind for success!
Step 1: Identify Your Limiting Beliefs
Start by noticing what you’re noticing. What stories do you tell yourself?
For example, when I transitioned from teaching to coaching, there was a voice in my head saying, “You’re not a businesswoman—you’re just a teacher.” That belief was keeping me small. If I wanted real success as a coach, I had to challenge it.
Ask yourself:
- What belief about myself or what’s possible is holding me back right now?
- Where did this belief come from? Where did I first hear it or see it in action?
- Is this belief true, or is it just a story I’ve been telling myself?
Writing down your limiting beliefs brings them into the light. Once you’re aware of them, you can start to let them go.
Step 2: Replace Limiting Beliefs with Empowering Truths
One of the most effective ways to shift your mindset is to flip the script on negative thoughts. For every limiting belief, create an affirmation that supports your vision of what you would love. For example:
Limiting belief: “I’ll never find clients.”
Affirmation: “I attract clients who are excited to work with me.”
When I first started coaching, I used this affirmation daily: “I am the most successful coach in my city.”
At the time, I was living in my parents’ basement and barely making ends meet. But by repeating this affirmation, I rewired my mind to believe in my potential. Over time, my results began to reflect my new belief.
Step 3: Surround Yourself with Positive People
The people around you have a massive impact on your mindset. Spend time with individuals who inspire and uplift you—those who have positive mindsets and encourage your growth. If you’re surrounded by negativity, it’s much harder to stay confident.
For me, one of the best parts of Brave Thinking Institute’s certification program was being surrounded by a community of like-minded coaches and mentors. They believed in my vision, even when I doubted myself. Their support helped me stay committed to my goals.
Find your tribe—whether it’s through a mentorship program, networking group, or even like-minded friends. (Psst- looking to connect? Start here!)
Building Daily Habits to Maintain Your Success Mindset & Get Real Results
A success mindset isn’t something you achieve once—it’s a muscle you strengthen every day. Developing daily habits helps you align your thoughts and actions with your goals.
1. Craft a Clear Vision
Your vision is the North Star that guides you. But it’s not enough to just think about what you want—write it down in vivid detail. When I first started, my vision included things like:
“I wake up naturally, without an alarm, because I have complete time freedom.”
“I work with clients who light me up and can’t wait to transform their lives.”
“I easily earn $100,000 a year or more helping others and doing what I love.”
Writing your vision in the present tense helps your subconscious mind believe it’s already true. This is a key step in shifting your mindset to align with your goals.
2. Practice Daily Affirmations
Your affirmations bridge the gap between your current reality and your vision. But they’re only effective when you use them consistently. Repeat your affirmations every morning or write them in your journal. Speak them with conviction, as if they’re already true.
For example:
“I am a confident, successful coach who transforms lives every day.”
Affirmations help rewire your brain, creating new neural pathways that support your growth.
3. Create a Morning Routine That Fuels Your Success Mindset Every Day
A strong morning routine sets the tone for your day. One of the most impactful practices I use is called G-VIBES:
G – Gratitude: Write down 10 things you’re grateful for.
V – Vision: Review or visualize your vision statement.
I – Intention: Set a clear intention for your day.
B – Be: Decide who you’ll be today (e.g., courageous, compassionate).
E – Enlightenment: Spend time learning or reflecting (e.g., read a book, meditate).
S – Scribe: Journal your thoughts or affirmations.
Even if you only spend five minutes on each step, this routine will align your mindset with your goals.
Staying Resilient Through Challenges
Let’s face it—building a coaching business isn’t always easy. Challenges will arise, and negative thoughts may resurface. When this happens, it’s crucial to stay resilient. Here’s how:
1. Anchor in Your Why: Remember why you became a coach. Is it to help others transform their lives? To create freedom for your family? Keep your purpose front and center.
2. Celebrate Small Wins: Every step forward is progress. Did you sign your first client? Celebrate it! Small wins build confidence and momentum.
3. Take Care of Your Mental Health: Your well-being is the foundation of your success. Incorporate daily exercise, healthy meals, and restful sleep into your routine to stay energized and focused.
Living Your Success Mindset: Claiming Your Identity as an Abundant Coach
Success starts with claiming your identity as the coach you want to be. Act as if you’re already thriving. Speak confidently about your work, even if you’re just starting out.
When I attended my first networking event, I introduced myself as a life coach who helps people achieve their goals—not as someone “trying” to start a business. This shift in energy makes a powerful difference.
Building a success mindset is the foundation for transforming your coaching career. By shifting your beliefs, embracing daily habits, and acting as if you’ve already achieved your goals, you’ll create long-term success.
Remember, the journey from doubt to confidence isn’t linear, but it’s worth every step. You have the power to change your mindset, learn and grow, and build the abundant coaching career you dream of.
