How to tap into the power of vision-led coaching for unstoppable growth & success
If you’re a coach or aspiring coach interested in creating success, both for yourself and with your clients, there is one type of coaching that stands out from the rest– vision-led coaching.
This coaching modality is used by some of the top coaches in the world because it empowers people to both achieve short-term goals and create sustainable, long-term transformation.
But what exactly is vision-led coaching, and how does it differ from other coaching philosophies? Why is having a vision of success crucial for both coaches and their clients?
In this article, we’ll explore these questions and dive into the impact of vision-led coaching for achieving even better results in every aspect of your life and business!
What is Vision-Led Coaching?
Vision-led coaching is a coaching philosophy based on the creation and pursuit of a clear, inspiring vision. Unlike traditional coaching approaches, vision-led coaching starts with the end in mind—a vivid picture of the future the client would love. This vision becomes the cornerstone of their journey, guiding every action, decision, and strategy.
One of the key differences between vision-led coaching and other approaches is its emphasis on the big picture. While many coaching programs focus on immediate goals or challenges, vision-led coaching encourages clients to think beyond their current circumstances and imagine their ideal future.
This approach is not just about solving problems but about transforming lives and businesses. As motivational speaker, world-renowned coach, and founder of the Brave Thinking Institute, Mary Morrissey often emphasizes, “Each one of us is far more powerful and contains more potential than any circumstance, situation, or condition.”
Vision-led coaching takes this value to heart by helping clients craft a vision so compelling that it becomes a powerful motivator for long-term success.
How a Vision of Success Helps Life Coaches Realize Their Full Potential
Not only is a clear, compelling vision essential for client success, but it’s also important for any coach who wants to build a successful coaching business. A vision of success serves as a guiding star, providing direction and motivation. It helps coaches stay focused on their long-term goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.
As a coach, a clear vision of success helps you:
- Clarify your “why” to guide the impact you make in the world
- Articulate your unique value proposition and stand out from other coaches
- Attract clients who resonate with your vision
- Stay aligned with your purpose and ensure that your efforts are moving you in the direction of your dreams
Vision-led coaching also emphasizes the importance of a coach’s personal growth. By developing a vision of what you’d love your coaching business to achieve, you can refine your approach, improve your skills, and make an even bigger impact in the world.
As Robin Sharma, best-selling author and leadership expert, once said, “The starting point of discovering who you are, your gifts, your talents, your dreams, is being comfortable with yourself.”
A vision of success not only guides your coaching business strategy, but also fosters ongoing personal and professional development.
How Successful Life Coaches Use Vision-Led Coaching for Better Client Results
Top life coaches know that one of the most significant benefits of vision-led coaching is its impact on client results. By helping clients create a compelling vision of their desired future, coaches empower them to take ownership of their journey. This sense of ownership is crucial for achieving lasting change.
When clients have a clear vision, they are more motivated to take action. They understand that every step they take brings them closer to a life they’d love.
Vision-led coaching taps into this motivation by aligning the client’s goals with their dreams. This increases the likelihood of achieving short-term goals and also ensures that these goals contribute to long-term success.
Instead of only focusing on specific challenges, clients are encouraged to consider how their vision aligns with their values, relationships, health, vocation, and overall well-being. For instance, a client who would love a thriving coaching business would also envision how their business success would contribute to their personal fulfillment and community impact.

5 Steps to Guide Clients to Create a Vision of Success
As a vision-led coach, part of your role is to help your clients create their own vision of success. This process involves several steps, each designed to tap into the client’s deepest desires and aspirations.
(Psst- you can use these steps for yourself and the success of your coaching business too!)
1. Explore Core Values and Desires
The first step in creating a vision of success is to help your client identify core values and desires. This involves deep reflection to explore what truly matters to them. By understanding their values, clients can create a vision that is inspiring and deeply meaningful.
Ask questions like:
- What are the three most important things in your life, and why do they matter to you?
- Think about a time in your life when you felt truly fulfilled. What values were you honoring?
- If you could focus on one thing that truly excites and motivates you, what would that be? What does it reveal about your core desires?
2. Imagine What They Would Love
Once the client’s values are clear, the next step is to imagine their ideal future. Coaches can guide clients through visualization exercises, encouraging them to picture their life 1, 3, or even 5 years from now. This vision should be as specific as possible and include all 4 quadrants of life- vocation, relationships, health and time & money freedom.
Ask questions like:
- Imagine your life or business a year from now if everything worked out exactly as you hope. What would a typical day look like for you?
- What would you love? What kind of relationships, career, health, and personal growth would you love to experience in the next year?
- How do you want to feel when you wake up each morning, and what needs to happen to create that reality?
3. Set Scaffolding Goals
With a clear vision in place, the next step is to set scaffolding goals—specific, measurable milestones that will help clients move towards their vision. These goals should be challenging yet achievable, providing the client with a sense of progress and momentum.
Ask questions like:
- In each quadrant of your life, what can you do from where you are and with what you have to move closer to a life you’d love?
- Which specific, measurable goals can you set that will challenge you to move forward?
- What short-term achievements would give you confidence that you’re on the right path to realizing your vision?
4. Create an Action Plan
Vision-led coaching emphasizes the importance of taking inspired action. Coaches work with clients to create an action plan that is flexible, allowing for adjustments as the client grows and evolves. By staying focused on the big picture, clients can navigate challenges and setbacks with confidence, knowing that there is always a creative solution that can move them closer to their vision.
Ask questions like:
- What real, actionable steps can you take in the next week, month, and quarter to move towards your goals?
- What is the first step you can take to move in the direction of your dreams? Can you commit to taking that step this week?
- What potential obstacles might you face? How can you prepare to overcome them while staying aligned with your vision?
5. Reinforce the Vision
Finally, vision-led coaching involves continuously reinforcing the client’s vision. This can be done through regular check-ins, visualization exercises, and even writing a “Big Vision Press Release” that celebrates the client’s future success. By keeping the vision front and center, coaches help clients stay motivated and committed to their journey.
Ask questions like:
- What daily or weekly practices can you use to keep your vision alive and front of mind?
- How can you celebrate small wins along the way to keep yourself motivated?
- If you were to write a press release announcing your success a year from now, what would it say? How can that vision guide your actions today?
