Expression of Gratitude: 3 Levels
Think about the first 10 minutes of your day.
What does it usually look like? What do you normally do, think, and feel?
For many years, my morning routine was: Jump out of bed, get ready as quickly as possible, grab coffee, and run out the door.
My morning practice was to be in a rush!
Over the years, I began to recognize that how I began my day impacted how my day was going to go. So, I started practicing a more intentional morning routine.
I’ve been using the morning practice I developed for many, many years. It has truly made a huge difference in how I feel, what I accomplish, and who I AM each day. .
The first step and foundation of my morning practice is a simple gratitude activity.
I often say that I don’t let my feet touch the ground before I’ve generated a state of gratitude– and it isn’t an exaggeration!
Some days generating gratitude feels easy, like putting on a comfortable pair of slippers I’ve been wearing for a long time. Other days it takes more repetition and effort to get into that state.
It’s important to know that’s normal. For all of us, gratitude will feel easier in some moments than in others, especially as we navigate the ups and downs of life. This is where the 3 levels of gratitude come in.
Understanding the 3 levels of gratitude will help you practice gratitude with intention and impact no matter what’s happening in your life at the time.
The 3 Levels of Gratitude: IF/WHEN, FOR, IN
Level 1: Grateful IF or WHEN:
1. Response to circumstances
2. Condition-based
3. Reactive
IF/WHEN Gratitude is when you feel grateful IF/WHEN something you want happens. It is a condition-based, reactive response to circumstances. It is the lowest level of gratitude because it is dependent upon something outside of you.
Level 2: Grateful FOR
1. Attached to a form of life
2. Attached to an experience
3. Natural appreciation
FOR Gratitude is when you feel grateful FOR things you already have that you love and enjoy. This level of gratitude is good, but it’s also easy and condition-based. If you lose those things, you may no longer feel grateful.
Level 3: Grateful IN
1. Beyond IF, WHEN, or FOR Gratitude
2. IN whatever condition we encounter
IN Gratitude is when you feel grateful IN whatever circumstance you find yourself in. It’s beyond IF/WHEN/FOR gratitude because it’s unconditional. When you can be grateful when things aren’t going your way, choosing to know that there is a seed of good in the situation, that is true power.
The Proven Mind and Body Benefits of Gratitude
Gratitude was significant in ancient philosophies and cultures, but the subject of gratitude rarely appeared in neuropsychological research until the last two decades.
Dr. Robert Emmons from the University of California, Davis and Michael McCullough have collaborated on multiple studies researching gratitude and its effects on mental and physical well-being.
Then in 2009 and 2014, Dr. Roland Zahn of the National Institutes of Health and a group of researchers explored the biological effects of gratitude on the actual brain itself.
These researchers found neural-mechanisms that demonstrated that feelings of gratefulness are evoked in the lower right front part of the cortex. This is the part of the brain that manages biological chemistry and hormones.
Gratitude supports the brain to:
- wire and fire new neural connections to the bliss center
- enhance dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters responsible for happiness
- reduce fear and anxiety by regulating the stress hormones
- foster cognitive restructuring by evoking positive thinking

The 5 Minute Gratitude Meditation Script
Use this short gratitude meditation script to infuse more gratitude into each day!
Before you open your eyes in the morning…
Or, if you’re already awake, taking a moment to close your eyes…
Take a deep breath. Then, as you continue to breathe, simply notice the natural pattern of your breath.
Step 1: Begin by generating a state of gratitude for the present moment.
Say to yourself, “I’m alive. I’ve been given the gift of life for this day. This day that I’ve been given is a brand new baby day that’s never been lived before.
No one else gets to live this day. No one else gets to choose how I will use this gift I’ve been given.
This isn’t just another day, it’s the ONE day I have. Not everyone woke up this morning. I choose to be grateful for the opportunity to live this day.”
Step 2: Then, bring your attention to the things in your life you are grateful FOR in this moment.
Express gratitude for the people in your life, your home, your job, and your pets, and your health. You might also consider less tangible things like your freedom, your experiences, and your opportunities.
Step 3: Continue by bringing to mind the things you can find gratitude IN.
These may be challenges, difficult situations, or obstacles you’re facing. You might offer your gratitude for the lessons you’re learning in your life right now or the creative solutions you’re looking forward to discovering, even if you don’t know what those are yet.
Doing so not only raises your vibration, but helps open your heart and your mind to the expectation that things are working out for your best and highest good.
Finally, taking slow breaths, repeat this gratitude meditation until you FEEL a sense of gratitude. Use this as often as you like, and remember, you can only experience the benefits of gratitude if you practice it.
