Practical steps to reset your mindset, habits, and actions for fast transformation that lasts.
There was a time in my life when I was flat broke and feeding my children split pea soup that they didn’t even like because it was the only thing I could afford.
I had a heart full of dreams, but only $3.31 in my wallet. In that moment, wishful thinking wasn’t going to cut it. I needed true transformation.
Maybe you do too. Is there a whisper in your heart that says, “There’s more for me than this.” Do you feel like you’ve checked all the boxes of success, but something still feels like it’s missing? Or maybe you’re starting over and wondering if it’s too late to truly live the life you came here to live.
Know this: You don’t need to wait for the “perfect time.” You don’t need to fix yourself, prove yourself, or chase your worth. Because the power to change your life isn’t out there. It’s already in you! And yes, you can discover how to change your life and start your transformation in just 7 days.
Below, I’ll walk you through some practical steps that have the power to unlock lasting change from the inside out––starting today.
It might feel frustrating or unnatural at first. Your mind will want to go back to old patterns. But by the end, you’ll start seeing the world—and your own power—differently.
If you want to know how to completely change your life in a short amount of time, read on.
“Even the smallest seed, when planted in rich soil, watered, and nurtured, knows exactly how to grow. Not because it tries harder, but because it aligns with the laws of life.”
I’ve shared these words on stage with thousands of people over the years, because they underscore where true change starts.
When it comes to any kind of serious transformation, the “seed” refers to your intent, your vision. And this is where a lot of people unknowingly sabotage their attempts to change.
Over 50+ years of helping people build lives they love, I’ve found that when we’re stuck in a rut, it’s often because we’re focused on what we don’t want, instead of what we do want.
For example, if I ask you “what do you want?” and your answer is something like:
- “I don’t want to be alone”
- “I don’t want to worry about money”
- “I don’t want these extra 25 pounds”
…then you’re likely focused on what you don’t want.
Is it “wrong” to focus on what you don’t want? Not at all. Is it “unspiritual” to do so? Not in the least.
The problem is, when we focus on what we don’t want, we’re placing our energy, attention, and vibration in exact harmony with the very thing we’re hoping to avoid.
By continually thinking about what you don’t want—debt, loneliness, failure, rejection—you’re emotionally rehearsing it, vibrating with it, and unconsciously inviting it into your experience.
As a result, you end up stuck in a reactive state, trying to ward off what you don’t want, rather than actively creating your desired daily life.
So when you think about how to changef your life over the next 7 days, don’t think of it as a battle against the past, a bad habit, a negative thought, or anything else unwanted.
Instead, think of it as plotting a bold new course for the future. Assume that the slate of your life has been wiped clean.
In what specific way(s) would you love to transform your life? For many of us, this question can feel intimidating.
Remember: this is the “seed” I spoke about earlier. In order for change to truly start working and happening over the next 7 days, your answer to this question can’t be cursory or intellectual.
It has to arise from the depths of your being, where thought quiets down, feelings speak up, and true decisions are made.
This is not a box that you can check. It isn’t a quick status update at work. It’s nothing less than a reckoning with your entire life project.
If you find yourself giving shallow, superficial answers, here’s a question that can shift you out of day to day perception and into a more heartfelt plane of self-examination.
“If I had 1 month left to live, what would I give anything to do, see, learn, receive, or experience?”
Most of us –– whether we realize it or not –– live as though our time on this planet is endless. If we’re asked, most of us will logically say we don’t actually think we’ll live forever. “Of course we’re all going to die. Everybody knows that. It’s obvious. What’s the point in dwelling on it?”
Yet as existential psychologist Irvin Yalom says: “The truth is that we ‘know’, but do not know.” We know about death. Intellectually, we know the facts. But on a heartfelt level, very few have realized that their time here is finite.
It’s similar to how, if you ask a wealthy person if they know that they won’t take their money with them when they die, 100% of them will say “yes, I know that.” Yet nearly all of them live as though they will. That’s because this idea lives in their intellect, rather than their awareness.
In asking this question, the goal is turning your own awareness of death way up. Close your eyes and vividly imagine that a doctor has told you, in no uncertain terms, that you have 1 month left.
This may not be comfortable at first, but if you can “go there” with your imagination, you will gain something priceless: the awareness of what means the most to you when there is no longer anything to lose, or any reason to wait.
When your time is almost up, obstacles stop feeling like obstacles. Excuses vanish. Emotions change. Is there a relationship you would love to repair? An experience that would fill your heart?
You may be surprised at which desires surface when you only have a month to go. What once seemed like long term goals might now become something you make time each day to at least get a taste of.
There’s no right or wrong answer, but you’ll know you’re on the right track when you feel, in your words, an undercurrent of true desire.
Maybe this will happen on day 1 of this 7 day experiment. Maybe it will take a day or two. The exact timing is less important than setting the stage for it to happen.
Next, write out a positive statement of your intended life change that starts with the phrase “I am so happy and grateful now that…”
This simple phrase shifts your mind into a state in which you already have the dream, and can actually see, taste, touch, feel, and hear it in the present tense. (Which activates significantly more manifestation power.)
So go ahead––write down a 1 or 2 paragraph long description of your dream as if it’s all worked out and come to pass, starting with the words “I am so happy and grateful now that…”
For greatest effect, write this description as a snapshot moment that feels real and visualizable. Capture the specific shapes and forms of what you would love.
For example, you might write:
“I am so happy and grateful now that my partner and I feel like we’re dating again––even though we’ve been married for 10 years. We’re fully present in conversation (not just flipping through our phones.) We text each other fun date ideas during work. Whether we’re grocery shopping or cleaning the house or driving on the highway, it feels like we’re the only two people in the world. Even when we get into an argument, which is rare, we’re laughing and hugging a few minutes later. Before, it often felt like we were business partners who shared a bed. Coexisting and keeping the house afloat. Now we have that real soulmate level connection.”
Your version may be something totally different, but notice how this one creates a picture, a mood, and an energy level. (It’s not just words about some abstract idea of feeling happy!)
That’s what you’re going for: something that, upon verbalizing it, actually starts coming to life that very second in your mind.
Once you’ve got it, it’s time to connect everything you’ve clarified and distilled so far with a physical action.
“What can I do right now, from where I am, with what I have?”
This is where the rubber meets the road.
Once you’ve identified the change you want to make in your life, it’s time to start small with a concrete action––right now.
The power of this question lies in its refusal to let us “hide” in the seemingly huge scope of our dream. The bigger the dream, the more our minds try to convince us that nothing we can actually do today will matter––and to just keep on waiting. Forever.
The truth is: even if you have grand, soaring, “put a dent in the Universe” visions, there is always something you can do TODAY to start moving the needed energy.
Maybe it’s…
- Sending an email to a potential collaborator for creative project
- Opening a business bank account for the new company you’re starting
- Creating a fun, outside-the-box dating profile website to post on social media
Whatever the “seed” is that you’ve planted (i.e. the change you want to start making over these next 7 days), this small first step is the “water” that you pour on top of it.
And importantly, this first step is just that: the first of many.
You will find yourself asking the “what can I do right now, from where I am, with what I have” question constantly as you build your dream, until it actually becomes second nature.
When you ask a question like “how to change your life in 7 days”, it seems like the answer should be a neat, daily schedule of prescribed activities and promised rewards.
If you’ve been reading my work for any length of time, you should know that transformation is never that linear or that clean.
Some readers will do everything in this article in one afternoon. Does that mean their entire life will change, externally, by bedtime? Of course not.
Others may take their time, allowing the “what if you had 1 month left” prompt to percolate and open their eyes to what truly matters to them.
What emerges will be different for everyone. You may choose a new career path, adopt new healthy habits, create an exercise routine, prioritize your mental health, or even land on a whole new life purpose.
What I can promise you is this: if you engage with these activities in a sincere, open-hearted fashion, something will shift in the next 7 days.
The change will come from a genuine place. It will be easier to stay on track. And you will look back on this effort as the dawn of a new day in your life.
