Why Words Matter for Real Life Results
The words we use on a regular, repeated basis – whether positive or negative, expansive or constrictive – are the framework through which the energy of life pours through us and into our experiences.
The words we use to describe the events in our lives, the experiences we have, and our circumstances eventually become accepted by our subconscious mind as the truth.
The words we use can actually override the objective truth in our lives.
For example, if I always say, “I’m not good enough,” it doesn’t matter that my potential is actually infinite. The truth of my potential would, in this case, be blurred by the lens of my words, keeping me from even seeing it, let alone realizing it!
The longer I say to myself, “I’m not good enough,” the more my subconscious mind will believe and act as if that statement is the truth. As a result, I’ll attract more experiences and circumstances that will act as “proof” that I’m not good enough.
It makes no difference what the “truth” really is- the manifestation of reality hinges on the belief system the subconscious mind holds, and those beliefs are shaped by the words we think and say.
In fact, there is ample scientific evidence that the words we use play a huge role in the outcomes we experience!
- Positive statements and motivational self-talk increase performance and success, especially for new experiences and tasks (source)
- Positive language in the form of self talk and affirmations increases confidence and decreases anxiety (source)
- The use of negative words has been shows to impact mental health, increasing the symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression (source)
- Positive affirmations, positive self-talk, and the regular use of positive language has been shown to favorably impact career and business success, reaction time, self-esteem, learning, focus, and health
If you want to create a life that you truly love, the first step is to be mindful of the words you’re choosing.
The words that you choose either help to raise you to a higher vibration, creating greater, freer, fuller results and bringing you more abundance, or they generate more struggle and lack.
5 Common Words to Avoid that Block the Power of Manifestation
Sometimes, we use low vibration words without even realizing what they are, and you might be surprised by some of the words that could be blocking your manifestation!
Remember- the energy of your life is a mirror. It will reflect back to you the framework of what you really believe about yourself and about life. The words on this list may be broadcasting a limited, constricted, low-vibration framework without you even realizing it!
1. Excitement
Most of us think of the word “excitement” as a word that brings about positive emotions… and many of us have experiences in which it probably felt great to be excited.
But as Genevieve Behrend pointed out in her wonderful landmark book, Your Invisible Power, the expression of the word “excitement” actually reflects a lack of belief.
When you’re excited about an outcome or a possibility, it’s evidence of a belief that it doesn’t belong to you. Afterall, if it really belonged to you, you wouldn’t be excited about it… it would be normal to you.
Every time we get excited about success, we’re saying that success isn’t normal for us – we send the message that it’s abnormal for us, a rare thing to get excited about.
Instead, focus on intentionally choosing words that claim the success or outcome as if it’s already yours and is a normal, consistent, expected thing in your everyday life.
For example, instead of saying or thinking, “I’m so excited about the raise I’m hoping to get!” choose language like, “I’m grateful that my salary reflects the passion and hardwork I put into my role!”
2. Maybe (and “I Guess”)
Words like “maybe” and “I guess” might seem harmless, but they can make it difficult to manifest the results you desire because they get in the way of something very important in your manifestation journey… your crystal clear vision!
The first step to powerfully effective manifesting is your vision- a clear picture of what you would love.
Words like “maybe” and “I guess” send the message that you aren’t really sure of what you want. If you find yourself using those words more often than you realized, it could be a sign that you would benefit from time spent getting unquestionably clear about what you desire and what you would love.
Without a clear vision, you will struggle to think the thoughts, feel the feelings, and take the actions necessary to bring your dream into reality!
Replace your “maybes” and “I guess’s” with a detailed vision of a life you’d love.
3. I Will
“I will” sounds like an empowering phrase, and many people make the mistake of using it often on their manifestation journey, believing that there’s value in declaring what they intend or plan to do, have, or be in the future.
However, creating powerfully positive change in your life through the power of manifestation relies on the present tense. This can be accomplished by “acting as if”. In other words, thinking, feeling, and acting as if the new reality you’re manifesting is already yours.
Replace your “I wills”, plans, and hopes with “I am”. Commit to spending less time thinking and talking about what you will do in the future and more time asking yourself what you can do with what you have right now to actively move in the direction of achieving your dreams.
4. Can’t, Won’t, & Don’t
For most people, “can’t”, “won’t”, and “don’t” seem like negative phrases. It isn’t usually difficult to see why they may not have a place in a successful manifestation journey.
If you think these words are troublesome because good manifesting language isn’t limited by the things we don’t think we can have or do, you’re right! Your vision for the future isn’t limited by what you’ve experienced so far. Your vision doesn’t even necessarily need to be practical, reasonable, or make sense.
However, as you practice manifesting the life of your dreams, it’s also important to remember that words like “can’t”, “won’t”, and “don’t” can sneak into our manifestation practices when we attempt to describe what we’d love by telling the universe (and ourselves!) what we don’t want.
For example, if you’re manifesting a new job, you might catch yourself saying:
- I know I don’t want another corporate job
- I can’t work for someone else, I’m just not cut out for it
- I won’t take any position for less than 6 figures
And, while those statements may sound true to you, the universe and your subconscious mind don’t differentiate between “want” and “don’t want”. They respond to your attention.
Instead, try replacing your “can’t, won’t”, don’t” statements with positive phrases that keep all of the attention and focus on what you do desire. For example:
- I know I’m meant to be a successful business owner
- I do my best work with full autonomy and creative control. That is my new standard.
- I am worthy of being paid well. My dream job pays me 6 figures, or something more!
5. Need
The word “need” invokes an energy of lack and desperation because it implies that you are attached to a specific outcome that you do not currently have.
It also suggests that some part of you may feel guilt, shame, or discomfort around the idea of having wants and desires that are worthy of being fulfilled. Remember- you don’t have to need something to make it important enough to become a real thing in your life!
As you practice manifestation, commit to focusing on and speaking your desires and wants as if they’re already on their way to you. Challenge yourself to be curious about all of the different ways the universe might bring your desires into your reality.
Replace your need statements with present tense statements that reflect the reality you are creating, even if it isn’t here yet!
An Easy Illustration to Help You Check Your Manifesting Words
As you practice replacing these unhelpful words in your manifesting practice, you’ll become aware of other, similar words that also may be hindering your results.
As you do, consider your manifesting words though the following example:
When you go home, walk in the front door, and the house is dark…What do you do?
Most likely, you flip on the closest switch for light. And chances are, you are not excited or surprised when the light comes on.
Why are you not excited? Why don’t you say anything like, “My gosh! It was dark, and now it’s light!”
The reason is simple– you fully expected the light to come on. You understand that there’s a law that governs the flow of electricity, the flow of those molecules, and it generates light where you direct it.
In the same way, you weren’t unsure that the light might not come on, you did not feel anxious about your need or desire to have more light, and you didn’t stop and think about how you didn’t want to be in the dark anymore… you just turned on the light and expected light.
It’s the same thing with this invisible energy. When you begin to understand the laws of your own nature, and the invisible laws that govern all our results, you begin to understand that excitement is actually frantic energy that doesn’t work in your favor.
You want your energy to be coherent, in alignment with your desired good.
Calm confidence is a much stronger vibration around which your results can organize into a coherent pattern that reflects the desire you’re hoping to turn into reality.
5 Manifesting Words that Increase Your Manifestation Success
Just like there are words that are less than ideal when it comes to manifesting the lives we love, there are also words that can be powerfully impactful at helping us experience more success in our manifesting journey!
To amplify your manifesting results, focus on language that is:
- present tense
- specific
- empowering
- emotionally evocative
The best language for manifesting empowers you to “act as if” and inspires you to be open to opportunities and take action in the direction of the outcomes you’re longing for. It emphasizes the emotions and gratitude you feel knowing that your desired outcome is already yours.
Some of my favorite words and phrases for manifestation success are:
- I am
- I have
- I am thankful / grateful
- I love
- I feel
The specific manifestation phrases that are the most impactful and powerful for you are those that are specific to the vision that you are bringing into your reality.
Craft your own manifestation affirmations based on the vision you have for the life you would love, but as you do so, weave in the five phrases above and be as specific as possible to supercharge your results!
Here are a few examples to inspires your own manifesting and law of attraction affirmations:
Phrases for manifesting a new career, job, or promotion
- I am so grateful that my new role truly reflects my value as an individual.
- I love my new job! I feel so inspired and creative and I am doing my best work yet.
- I have the best career. I am so thankful I am providing for my family and doing meaningful work that I love.
Phrases to manifest abundance
- I am fully supported and abundant. My wealth allows me to live a life filled with things I love, like travel and giving to my loved ones.
- I have all the financial abundance I desire. I feel at ease and relaxed when it comes to my money.
- I am always attracting greater levels of abundance into my life. I have more than enough.
Phrases to manifest love and partnership
- I am thankful that my perfect partner is already on their way to me. I love that I feel so loved and supported in my life already, and I know our partnership will only add to that.
- I have the best relationships in my life that I’ve ever had. I am so grateful to the universe for bringing new love into my life in so many ways!
- I feel loved. I am grateful for the abundance of love showing up in my life each and every day.
There is a power in us that knows how to do all things.
No matter what you desire to manifest into your life, you couldn’t have this dream unless there was a way to bring it about. Today is your day. Even if you’re feeling adrift, you can manifest your dream.
To paraphrase David Henry Thoreau,
“If you advance confidently in the direction of your dream, and endeavor to live the life you’ve imagined, all kinds of things happen that you can’t make happen. Because you’re using words and putting yourself in harmony with that dream, you pass an invisible boundary. You begin to live with the license of higher order beings.”
Remember, the words you choose to describe your reality will eventually shape your reality. Do your best to use high-vibration words as often as you can!

Thank you so much, Mary, your blog contained seeds of valuable information as to the words we use to address the Universe. I was as surprised as others about ” excited”. Grateful and thankful would definitely be better. You are a master of your art.
Oddly, in my younger days I did the right things spontaneously, and what I desired came true. It sometimes took years, but it happened. It seemed a natural process.

thanks Mary for this video, as it explains why my lack of belief in trusting the process made its way to the top of my paradigm list this past week. I used the word excited when I got the idea we have within us a Genius who knows everything and can bring about what we want out of life. I didn’t trust in the process and so held onto the words to describe my health, instead of letting them go into the Universe and be already there. As a result, this week my health and wellness has fallen into poor results in that I mirrored high blood pressure and other major factors in poor health. Once I let go of the idea that it is normal to feel healthy and ask my Innate about what to do about it, I feel much better and am nourishing myself. I gave myself permission to eat nutritious foods, slow down, breathe and drink plenty of water.

I have long learned that the words we use can make a difference. I read somewhere that the word “busy” at one time meant angry. I use that word a lot…. but not because I am angry. LOL I liked your suggestion of saying “I appreciate” instead of “I want.” It would be nice to know more replacement words or phrases to use in a positive way.
Sheronica Brown
Thank you so much, I really needed to hear this, I will definitely pay attention to the words that I use, this was very inspiring.
Beth
Never ever would I have thought that excited was a low vibrational word. When I stop & think about how I act when Im excited & how I’m perceived, it’s not a good thing.
Thank you so much for this wonderful adjustment.
Harriet
Thanks for this insight. I’m glad that I rarely use the word “excited.” I focus on slowing down and mindfully saying what I mean to say and being succinct. I have learned that words are indeed creative.
Toni Camino
Couldn’t “excited” be evolved, increasing through various levels of experience?
Yes always awe, yet also amazed at the miracles we expect.
Diana
This was a perfect reminder of tapping into the energy that always been with us since we were born. . The knowing is the calmness that we tap into to make our dreams and desires a reality .

I Trust that..

Great talk. I am changing my words today. I am going to say inspired and thrilled. Most of the time I say I am so grateful for what I have or get.
Shari
This is very interesting and I see how important words are but I never would have put it together with the word exciting. This has been a very common word in my vocabulary and I’m going to do my best to switch it out.
Thank you!

I appreciate all of the amazing opportunities that I have to help people transform their lives.

Your blog post could not have been more timely Mary. I’m guilty of using the word excited during my efforts to manifest and used it just ten minutes ago! I guess I was guided to read this important message. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I am indeed grateful 😉

“It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words. A good person produces good deeds and words season after season. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”
Thank you for the video – I was inspired.

I think of every word I use and keep away from any word that is a negative. I loved your presentation on this as we are all deserving of the best for us because we’ve asked for it and when we are ready, it will come

Aah! Great reminder, Mary…Thank you !

Hello Mary
I came across your TED talk, and from there have found my way here. I find it all really compelling and convincing, but am stuck on how specific one is ‘allowed’ to be. My dream is to get back with the man I was with – he is all I can imagine if I imagine a relationsip, which is what I want above all – but is that in fact just being stuck, rather than dreaming? Although given Thoreau’s comment above I think perhaps not- perhaps I should act as if it will happen, and then it will!
Lynn
Hi Katherine,
You are just dreaming when you say, “My dream is to get back with the man I was with – he is all I can imagine if I imagine a relationsip, which is what I want above all -“. You are stuck on him and Being stuck on him is indeed being stuck. Free yourself from him, and know what you really want. Ask your heart what really makes you feel happy.
