How to “Hack” Your Unconscious Mind to Set Yourself Up for Success
Are you truly in control of your thoughts and actions?
What if there was a way to “hack” your subconscious mind with subtle cues to sway the way you think, behave, and even your mood?
This phenomenon actually exists – and the good news is that you can harness its power to speed up your manifestations.
In his groundbreaking book Blink, bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell shines a light on how subtle changes in our environment can influence our behavior – most of the time, without our conscious awareness.
This phenomenon is called “priming.”
What Is Priming?
Priming is a technique in social psychology where exposure to one stimulus influences your response to another, often without conscious awareness.
In simpler terms, it’s like setting the stage in your mind to react in certain ways.
If you’ve ever noticed how a specific song can uplift your mood or how a smell can transport you back to a childhood memory, you’ve experienced priming psychology in action.
There can be positive and negative priming. Priming affects memory retrieval, mental associations, how you react to situations, and even your mood.
A great priming example involved an experiment in Spain, where authorities decided to start playing soft, low-volume classical music over the loudspeakers on the subway in an effort to reduce crime.
The results were startling – just by introducing the music, vandalism, littering, and other crimes drastically decreased!
When surveyed, commuters later reported that hearing classical music made them feel happy, less stressed, and relaxed.
The music had affected their behavior without them even realizing it.
Another priming psychology example was a study done by John Bargh, where he exposed students with words that were associated with old age. At the end of the study, the students walked slower than when they first came in – the students were primed with words to behave more like elderly people!
By understanding and using positive priming, you can align your subconscious mind with your goals, making it easier to achieve your dreams.
Types of Priming
Perceptual Priming
Perceptual priming occurs when the characteristics of a stimulus, such as its shape or color, make it easier to recognize the same stimulus later. For example, looking at the color red may make you think of an apple later on.
Semantic Priming
Semantic priming happens when a stimulus related to the meaning of another word or concept influences your response. For instance, if you hear the word “doctor,” you’re likely to think of related words like “hospital.”
Repetition Priming
Repetition priming involves repeated exposure to a stimulus, making it easier to recognize or respond to it in the future. Think about how hearing a song several times makes it easier to sing along the next time it plays.
Conceptual Priming
Conceptual priming is similar to semantic priming but focuses on the ideas and concepts. For example, thinking about “honesty” might make you more likely to notice actions that seem honest or dishonest around you.
Associative Priming
Associative priming occurs when related stimuli are presented together, making it easier to recall one when you encounter the other. For example, if you frequently see a picture of your favorite vacation spot while drinking a particular tea, the taste of that tea might later evoke memories of that vacation.
Affective Priming
Affective priming involves emotions. If you’re exposed to positive stimuli, like uplifting music or kind words, you’re more likely to respond positively to other stimuli. Conversely, negative stimuli can lead to negative responses (like being short-tempered at home because you had a stressful day at work.)
How to Prime Yourself for Success
Your subconscious mind is a powerful ally on your journey.
By setting the stage in your mind, you’ll find it easier to achieve your dreams and live a life filled with purpose and abundance.
Whatever it is that you would love to create for yourself and your life, here you have seven powerful priming examples that will help you feel more inspired, happy and connected to your goals and dreams each and every day…
So that you manifest them even faster!
1. Use the Power of Your Words
Words are one of the most powerful tools to shape your reality.
You can prime yourself to feel grateful, deserving and successful by using positive, powerful, uplifting words as you go through the day, starting when you first wake up.
For example, you can wake up and say to yourself, “Today is going to be a great day!”
Even if you don’t know what the day holds for you yet, you can make a decree to yourself that it’s going to be an extraordinary one for you.
You can also practice other positive affirmations throughout your day, such as:
I am loving and deserving of love.
Every day I am showing up and doing my best.
I am healthy, happy, and beautiful inside and out.
When you use expansive, uplifting language like this, you are internally priming yourself to have a successful, productive day…
Which will put you in the best position to move toward your goals and dreams!
2. Write Down Your Goals and Dreams Daily
According to Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at the Dominican University in California, when you write down your goals on a regular basis, you become 42% more likely to achieve them.
That’s why I highly recommend you write down your top five goals and dreams, preferably in a journal where you can go back to easily.
This doesn’t have to be a long, time-consuming exercise – it can even be a few words describing each dream.
When you write down your goals and dreams on a regular basis, they become ingrained in your subconscious mind and become a part of who you are, which helps to guide your thoughts and actions in your daily life.
3. Surround Yourself with Inspirational Images
A powerful way to prime our subconscious mind for success is through images.
I encourage you to feed your senses with uplifting, empowering images that are aligned with your goals and dreams. A fantastic way to do this is to create a vision board.
You can also tape pictures up where you’ll see them regularly, for example, on your bathroom mirror. Then, as you’re brushing your teeth each morning and evening you see that beachfront property you want to buy or that place you want to travel to, for example.
Or try putting an image of what you would love as wallpaper on your smartphone, so that every time you open your phone, it’s the first thing you see.
These images keep those dreams front and center in your mind…
And as you know, where focus goes, energy flows and results show!
4. Tune Into Your Best Self with Music
Music is an amazing tool for positive priming.
Create a playlist that resonates with your goals and dreams. Choose songs that uplift your spirit, boost your confidence, and make you feel unstoppable. You may curate a selection of songs that help you tune into the version of you who is an entrepreneur, who is wealthy and abundant, or who is living their dream love story with a significant other.
Whenever you need a boost, listen to your playlist to tune into your best self.
5. Unlock Positive Energy Using Your Body, Posture, and Movement
Your body language and posture have a profound impact on your mind…
And this positive priming psychology technique can help you feel more powerful and confident.
According to studies from Harvard University, “power poses” can affect your hormonal levels, helping you feel calmer and more confident.
Try the “Wonder Woman” pose: stand tall, open your chest, and rest your hands on your hips. Or you can also do the “Victory” pose: stand tall, lift your arms, and take up space. Hold the pose of your choice for a couple of minutes.
Remember that incorporating regular movement into your routine, whether it’s dancing, stretching, or taking a brisk walk, will also keep your energy high and your mind focused.
6. Unleash Your Manifestations with Meditation
The unconscious mind can’t differentiate between reality and imagination – and that’s what makes meditation a wonderful tool for priming.
By tuning into the feeling of already having what you desire, you align your subconscious mind with your goals, and tap into the frequency of your dreams with ease.
Visualize your dreams vividly, and let the emotions well up in your body. How would you feel if you had the business you want to launch, or if you were in the middle of that bucket-list vacation?
Use your mind’s eye to picture your goals regularly, and watch your dreams unfold!
7. Regulate Your Mood with Essential Oils
Scents can have a powerful priming effect. You can use essential oils like lavender for relaxation, peppermint for energy, or citrus for a mood boost.
Inhale these scents during your morning routine to prime your mind for positivity and focus, or at any point in your day if you want to lift your spirits.
